Hey guys, new here. 77 Cutlass

Post by MichiganMuscle77 on Tue May 26, 2009 6:49 pm

Found a link to this place on the 73-77olds.com forums, figured I'd swing in and sign up.

I own a 1977 Olds Cutlass Supreme. Ok, here's the controversial part I hope you can look past - it has a Chevy 350 in it. That's how I bought it! I can't really afford an engine swap, and besides, I know the motor and like the motor... so it's staying at least for the mean time.

The engine? Oh yea, here's what it's got:
-Holley 600cfm
-Edelbrock Intake
-Vortec Heads
-RV Cam
-Long tube headers, 3" center dumps with Flowmaster 40 Series mufflers
-Geared timing
-TH350 Transmission with shift kit (soon to be a built 700r4)
-3.73 limited slip rear end (soon to be posi)

I don't know what the standard options were for each trim level of the 77 Cutlass, but I think mine is pretty loaded for a 77.
-Power Windows
-Power Locks
-Windshield radio antenna
-Cruise Control (removed)
-A/C (removed)
-DIGITAL passenger dash board clock (still can't figure that one out, haha)
-Rear defrost

As it sits, the defrost doesn't work, obviously the cruise and A/C went away with the engine swap, the aftermarket AM/FM Cassette is very weak (gonna get one of those retro styled MP3 head units and some nice stock fit speakers soon - nothing too crazy, just want to be able to listen to music once in a while), but everything else works. Except for the passenger door window switch. Master switch still controls it, though.

Here's how she looks.

Photoshopped a "clear hood"... My engine bay isn't pretty enough to be seen unfiltered, lol

The pics make the car look better than it does. I mean, it's in great shape, but the prep job done by the previous owner for the paint was done poorly. Some over sanded spots, some cracks in the paint on the roof, and some rust bubbles at the bottoms of the rear wheel wells. Other than that, the car is absolutely solid, no SERIOUS rust. Bumpers are on nice and solid, floor pan is great (save for one quarter sized hole under where your left foot rests), everything is in pretty good shape for a 32 year old Michigan car. I'm happy with it, it's a great start for me.

My plans are pretty much to keep it looking stock. I love the wheels, love the color, love the stance.. but i do intend on upping the HP a bit. Most importantly I want it to be drive-able. As is, I can drive this car anywhere. She fires up easily (even in the cold, but doesn't get driven in the rain or snow - no worries), rides smooth, handles.. like an old American car handles, stop great, and those seats are SO comfy.

So, that's my ride. Hope you like it!

Oh yea, by the way... icing on the cake. Here's how she sounds apart from the starter, which I've replaced with a gear-reduction starter - much quieter and smoother starting.

Welcome aboard!
That's a very nice Cutlass! You should be very proud of owning such a nice car, especially in that condition. And don't worry about the Chevy power- if it works, it works!

Welcome to the site! Beautiful car there, inside and out. Love those seats! Is that material original? The engine sounds bad-A$$ too. You mentioned you're planning to replace the limited slip differential with a posi unit?

Original material. There are a few tears and it needs to be cleaned up, but it's in pretty good shape.

I'm gonna go with 3.73 posi but I also need a different stall converter, just not enough "oomph" from a stand still. Pulls best through the 2000-3000 rpm range.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone!

Just so I don't have the unfair advantage with a completely gutted Cutlass, now I'm gonna drop the 455 into that old 73. Unlike Chebby, Olds motors don't need gears... they got enough torque to overcome that problem. tongue Let's go all motor. Anyone got some frame pads & headers? lol.
