Upper control removal question Empty Upper control removal question

Post by KC77Monte Sat Nov 19, 2016 2:18 pm

Started removing the front suspension on the Monte yesterday and ran into a snag. We can't get the drivers side arm removed, the arm will not slide back far enough to clear the bolts with the steering shaft in the way. We also can't get the bolts to remove either, there's not enough room to tap them out. Has anyone ran across this while doing there's? I'm thinking we might have to cut the bolts and replace them, but thought I would ask here first. Thanks

At the.end of the steering shaft is a rag joint right where.it bolts to the steering box. There's a single.bolt to remove and you can pry the rag joint off the box. Then the steering shaft will just lay to the side giving you room. Don't lose the.bolt.

When I was taught to to this 20 plus years ago, we would spin the studs free (from under the arm) then remove them as bolts.  This is when we were repairing regular daily drivers.

I wouldn't turn the heads.of the.bolts. The.studs.are.not threaded.into the frame, they are.pressed in. They have a spline right below the head. You tap them in and the.lock and won't turn. I think it would be a real.pain doing an alignment if the head.spun.

We would add a lock washer behind the head.  It was about 50/50 shot whether or not the stud would spin.  I wouldn't do it this way now, but that's how we did it then.

I, too, knocked the stud out just enough to pop the UCA off. Tightened down to 80 ft lbs just fine afterwards...I didn't know Chevy put the doggon A/C compressor on the driver's side. Holy crap.
