Dual Exhaust System for '75 el Camino

Post by BAS-Sr on Mon Oct 03, 2016 5:19 pm

OK, so I just got done installing the double hump cross member in my '75 el Camino, now shopping for a dual exhaust system for it.

Over the last few years, have done real nice dual exhaust on my '68 & '72 el Camino's, both BBC's with stock exhaust manifolds, used Classic Exhaust in Geneva, Ohio, did a real nice job on the pipes (exhaust/tailpipes) & mufflers, both were fairly reasonably priced.

Been in communication with Scott at Classic Exhaust, he seems to be having some difficulty finding patterns to do this for my '75. There are a few differences from the stock/factory setup and what he can come up with:
- SBC 400
- Patriot Headers
- Most '75's were single CAT with single exhaust/muffler/tail pipes

I want to come off the header collectors directly into 2.5" exhaust pipes, nice quiet mufflers, and have the tailpipes over the rear tucked nicely between the frame and the quarter panel inner panels, tailpipe turned down exiting exiting just before the bumper. When you look under the vehicle, this looks pretty straight forward. All of this in 2.5" aluminized pipes with good, quite muffler(s).

My question here is, anyone here on this forum know of any place that can make this up and ship it to me? I can take pictures and take measurements, so seems to be pretty straight forward?

I visited a few local shops, they seem to be fairly expensive, both the '68 & '72 cost $360 shipped, guys around here want $600 plus! And I don't think the systems will be as good as what I got from Classic Exhaust!

Bas-sr, If you check out a 73 Chevelle/El Camino, they both had an option of true dual exhaust systems. I know that Walker still offers the systems. I wouldn't think that a 73 and 75 would be different underneath.

Maybe take a look at pypes exhausts. Their fit is good and clean. I believe they are not far from you in pa. They are also looking for ginuea pigs to do exhausts on. I'd call them up.

Looks like Pypes is all stainless stuff? I am looking for aluminized.....

I bought my dual exhaust pipes for my '75 Laguna from Scott, too.  I thought the fit was very good; although probably not as tight to the underside of the car as you might get with a custom job.  But, as you have probably found out, muffler shops won't touch a dual exhaust conversion without cats on '75 and up cars for legal reasons.

I think Scott works off of original bend cards and and not customized systems to accommodate headers, different bends, etc. I honestly don't know how you're going to get someone to fab something like this without having the car in front of them to verify measurements and fitment. For what it's worth, there is no difference in the underside of the car between '74 & '75...so, a stock dual exhaust layout for a '74 would fit the same as on a '75 (with the addition of the dual hump crossmember).

Yes, Walker has a setup for '73 BBC, but having some trouble finding the exhaust pipe numbers??

The front exhaust pipes do not look like they are available? No part numbers?

Talked to Scott tonight, says he does not have a bend card for a '75 el Camino?

How about this place sir?

When I had mine done, it was all time and materials. Any custom shop that does hot rods, trucks, street machines should be able and willing to do the work for you.

Good luck.

And, no card for a '74 Elkie? Regardless, at least the front pipes would be the same as on a '74 Chevelle...and, I know he has that card. Hell...even I have that bend card. But again, I don't know if he's able or willing to fab the front pipes to fit your headers. That becomes custom work and I can understand why he wouldn't want to go there and risk it not being correct. With bend cards, there is no doubt as to dimensions. Suppose the tail pipe would need to be extended on the front end to make up the 4" difference in length in wheelbase between Elkie and Chevelle?

Not sure if you want to go the same route I did, but I ordered the Flowmaster 17119 kit for the 72 Chevelle. It's a little more spendy from Summit than when I bought it, but I saved a few bucks back then by ordering through a local speed shop. I see Summit has a rebate on it now.
Anyway, I hung it under the car and snugged the clamps to set everything correctly, then took it to a local shop to have it all welded tight and have the collector pipes cut and set. May be a few more bucks than most exhaust setups, but with the mandrel bends, H pipe, and 2.5" diameter front to rear, the finished product and sound are pretty nice. The overall length was perfect for my El Camino.

Jeff, I don't see anything at Waldron that would do the job?

I think that is what is giving Scott some pause, the headers and the fact that the el Camino is ~4" longer wheel base than the Monte and Chevelle/Laguna.

I have under mine a magnaflow 15894. Fits nicely with some "massaging" at a dedicated exhaust shop.

You could do a 15898.

There is enough adjustment in the system to account for your 4" difference in length.

I don't know about the duals up to the headers, but Summit Racing has a dual system, under part number SUM-680131-SS 2 1/2 inch pipes..Maybe you could chase that p/n down & see what it is.
I didn't get into using that system because I wanted all stainless steel on my '75 Elco.

I ended up with Borla mufflers, and sections of stainless pipe, some bends, an H pipe etc, and tail pipes for a '72, which I had to modify to fit like I wanted. My engine doesn't have headers, no room to use them on a Caddy 500.....

Hey Bill, how you doing over here on G3GM?

That system looks interesting? Price is reasonable, I wonder how well it will fit the '75 el Camino?

I would think that the Elco, being 4 inches longer, would need to have the 4 inches added some place if the system is for a Chevelle. Likely ahead or behind the mufflers (?)

Mine, like I mentioned, is sections, TIG welded together, which is OK except I'm not happy with the tail pipes.

One thing I did, which turned out to be a good idea, was using stainless band clamps on the whole system. It comes apart easy, and joints cam be turned etc if needed...

Good to see ya on here BAS !!
