Re: My 73 vin decode
You mean Trim Tag Decode. VIN is on your windshield. That tag is on your cowl.
Starting on the top row.
73 model year.
1AD37 Chevelle sport coupe
198656 Body sequencing code (if I remember correct)
704 Black oxen fabric interior
A52 Bench seat
19 Tuxedo black exterior upper
19 Tuxedo black exterior lower
03D17 03D build date of March, 4th week. (17 is unknown)
0687 sequencing number used at the plant.

Try to grab the numbers and letters off the engine block pad right behind the alternator. Should be 6 digits space 3 letters.
If the 6 digits match your last 6 digits of your VIN you have a numbers matching block to the car.
The last 3 letters will tell you what trans came with the car originally.

Re: My 73 vin decode
Is there a designation for SS equipment? How about a designation on the cowl tag that tells you what motor originally came in the car, in this case for a SS 350 cubic in. vs 454 cubic in.?
(This would be handy information if your car is known to have a non original motor)

Re: My 73 vin decode
No SS designation on the trim tag and no engine designation on the trim tag either. Just basically exterior and interior color, bench or buckets and build date.
Best way to check for original engine would be with the stamp on the pass. side of the block right behind the alternator. The last six digits of your vin will be there and three letters. The six digits have to match your vin to be numbers matching. The three letters will tell you what trans came with that engine originally.

5th digit of the VIN will tell you what the 1973 Chevelle originally came with. So for the SS engines they are:
H for 350 2v (L65)
K for 350 4v (L48)
X or Y for 454 (LS4)
