tilt column Empty tilt column

I had the steering column apart on my Malibu, to see why the tilt doesn't return to the "up" position. I have to give up on that. I couldn't figure out how to get past the top casting with the 3 big screws in it.
I may just look for another one. This one is from a '73, and appears to be different than the '77 column in my Elco. I have too much on my plate right now to remove it & work on it on the bench. No

Would this be of any help, Bill?

I just did it tonight. Mcarlo's link is helpful. After removing the 3 big phillips screws, use a tiny screwdriver to press down the tang holding the key cylinder in. Once pressed, the cylinder will slide right out. Then use some needlenose pliers to pull out the white key buzzer module (pretty obvious with 2 metal contacts), and the black spring that is helps secure it. Then that top casting will slide right off.

Its sort of hard to see in this pic, but the tang to press on the key cylinder is between the black phillips head and the buzzer contacts at about 11 o'clock. It was a little challenging to press for me, one side wanted to go down, then the other, so I got a wider screwdriver, no problem.

I'd rather work on it in the car than on the bench just because my eyes can see it better right there upright in front of my face. The challenge is making sure not to drop a screw down into the column (you know how we learn these things...).

Thanks for that !!  Sounds like a summer job at my house, under a shade tree !!

That is what I needed to know yesterday !! Maybe I'll take it apart again later. I have all the special tools for the column .

I already had the lock cylinder out, and this column did have a key buzzer contact in it, but I couldn't get that casting off, so I'll review the pages from the link & see if I'm enlightened a bit !! Very Happy

Anyway, I printed out the link about the column, and put the pages in a 3-ring binder.
The column in my Elco has some movement below the tilt section, which I will have to address eventually.

And thanks again for that link Mcarlo77 !! Very Happy
