Why do you have a G3? Empty Why do you have a G3?

Post by Roadcaptain S3 Sat Jan 28, 2017 8:58 am

A discussion on another site got a little interesting and I'm just curious. Why do you have (or want) a G3?

Some of you know I've had other projects. A 75 Laguna, 2 65s, a 68  and 2 fox Mustangs, a 64 Thunderbird, 63 Belair, 96 Impala SS and a couple of Jeeps.
Someday I'll probably have something with big tail fins.

But the 77 Malibu Classic is the only one that I'll have til I'm dead. For a lot of reasons.

Do you have yours because you would really rather have a 71 'Cuda but the 74 Monte fits your budget better?
Do you just like to be different?
Was it your first car and you've just kept it?
Do you just think it's a great car to drive?

For me, I always wanted an SS Chevelle, and when my e cane up on craigslist, I reached out to seller and started asking. Then started doing more ssearch and the love affair began. I was always a "dare to be different" car guy, as my first car I hotrodded a 72 impala custom coupe sleeper.

Once you put radial tires on the G3 cars their handling is one of the things I'm most impressed about these cars.

First of, the elcamino was the only us made car i could afford as a Young man. In 73 there was alot of elcaminos and staton wagons around here, now they are gone. So i have a sentimental reason. Im 18 every time i sit in one. Next they drive better than most old cars, and you dont see to Many of them anymore. I have always loved the look of them, even if Many say they are ugly i like them. I am a die hard mopar fan and have had alot of them. But my chevelle and my elcamino drives better and has a place in my heart. I wish i had the room and funds to have one of each, chevelle for hotroding. A elcamino for hauling parts. And a stationwagon for everyday driving.

For myself, I've only had mine now for just shy of a year and have to say, I'm liking it a ton. My wife and I did have a 73 SS back in the early 80's, but I really didn't do much to it then as I had my 69 SS396 El Camino. THAT was my baby! I still want to buy it back after not having it for 26 years or so, but he chump that has it now won't sell it back to me. He's going to "restore it!" He hasn't done squat to it now for 20+ years.

Any ways, I also had a V-8 S10 for 14 years and had a blast with it, but I sold it because I wanted a new project.
That was 10 years ago and I either didn't have the money, or just wasn't looking for anything yet. So last winter I finally came up with the cash for a project and my lovely wife gave me the green light with a budget to find a new toy. I looked at loads of different cars and trucks but none were in the budget. So after looking at Chevelle's on CL one night, I ran across a "barn find" saying it was from Texas and almost rust free. I called the seller and went to look at it the next day. Low and behold, he was right. It was almost rust free and it ran and drove. So for $2500 it was loaded on the trailer and headed to my house. It may not have been my first choice of a new toy, but I have started to fall in love with it and have no plans on selling it. I do how ever have lots of plans for it. I can't wait to see where this little venture takes me.
I too am into the "dare to be different" thing. Yes, some , or most, think it kinda ugly, but I do plan on changing it just enough to make it not so ugly. I could give a crap what others think or say. I've been like that all my life.

I really don't like the way it handles, but I do like the way it rides. Does that make sense? lol This spring's projects are to put a 4 barrel carb and intake on it and get it to handle better, I have a rear sway bar from a 96 Impala SS and just located a set of all 4 springs from an Impala SS as well. Now I just have to get a 70-81 Z28 front sway bar along with some good shocks and this years projects will be set to be done.

That's why I am where I am at with this project. Everyone take care and let's all have fun with these wonderful G3's.

I enjoy the cars of the early 70"s because of their good handling, ride, and braking.
I'd much rather have a 68-72,but prices are crazy.
You can tell the cars were well built, because so many are still around today.
The styling was creative,flowing lines,curves,chrome.
The cars today all look the same, cheap plastic, and a years salary..to drive them through the snow and salt?
Stupid people.

Post by Damon23 Sat Jan 28, 2017 12:27 pm

After selling my 1963 Catalina last February I set out to find a new project. I had a budget of $10k and looked around at all the normal stuff. Camaro's, TA's, trucks and Impala's. There was nothing out there. I was on ebay one night looking at the cars and ran across the '75. It looked great in pictures. It was a Texas and Nevada car. After it caught my eye I started looking around I found one here locally. It was a 77. The guy wanted $8k for it and looking it over I couldn't see $8k and the dude was pretty firm. Nostalgia really set in as my grandmother had a 76 and a 77 wagon. My neighborhood friend, his parents had a 77 and a friend in school had a 76 in the color mine is now. I ended up winning the bid and $800 later it showed up on a truck. Since it showed up last March Iv'e fought with it, cussed it, swore it off, put it up for sale but only after tackling all the gremlins and getting it to Daytona for the turkey rod run and cruising that thing and getting all the positive feedback from people I decided to make it mine. I believe I couldn't have found a better one, with better bones and complete. Some people say I'm going to ruin it if I see out my vision but I'm not building it for them or for the internet. It will be for me. Will it be a wise investment? Probably not but how I see it, any investment into the enjoyment of my life is the best investment you can make. I paid $5600 for the car and have seen them go cheaper but to fine one with no rust in the floors, quarters, trunk, and body is a hard thing to do as I've seen.

Why do you have a G3? Empty Re: Why do you have a G3?

Post by Roadcaptain S3 Sat Jan 28, 2017 9:38 pm

I appreciate the comments. About what I figured too.
My turn.
I'll be honest, and probably piss some people off.
1. My first car was a 74 Malibu. I loved it. I loved the long hood, short trunk, smooth lines, swivel buckets, loud stereo and the combination of a semi classy car and hot rod. I never viewed it as a muscle car. I put it on par with Thunderbirds, Regals, Grand Prix et al. I drove the hell out of it through college, dates, parties and work. I lived in it and it never let me down, even on long road trips. It drove great on surface streets and interstates. With a little tweaking, it was faster than the old junk 60s cars still around at the time, and the new 80s cars the rich kids had. All for $1000. I had it for 4-5 years and sold it because I thought I needed a "grown up" car. I tried to get it back 6 months later with no success.
2. After many years of life happening, I was finally in a position to buy a hobby car. I feel I am very blessed to say I could have just about anything within reason budget wise, but I didn't want a Street Rod, Camaro,  Chevelle, Vette, Firebird etc because they are way overpriced and pretty boring since you see them everywhere, all the time. It also seems pretty stupid to spend that kind of money on a car you'll drive part-time. Like a boat or motorcycle. I got my first 65 Mustang even though the same applies. They're semi expensive, everywhere and boring, but I had wanted one since I had a Mustang pedal car.
I found out quick that cars of that era are a huge pain in the A$$ to drive.
Many are basically junk. It's like riding in a tuna can while working out at the gym wearing a bucket on your head. I drove a few other muscle cars. Same thing. They are primitive unless you spend thousands to upgrade everything from steering, brakes AC etc. They look cool, but driving them truly sucks.
Why people spend 30 thousand and up for those things will always be a mystery to me.
And when I think of those cars I can't help but imagine a fat, grumpy, loudmouth, know-it-all old white guy driving it.
Why? Because there sure are a lot of those kinda guys that have them. I've met a lot of them and I think they were all cloned from the same dude. Guys that have those cars are obsessed with them. They argue and fight about who has the best car. Mustang guys will tell you that it's the only car worth having, then they fight among themselves about which version of the Mustang is the best. Same with Vette guys,Street Rod guys, Chevelle guys. They will all tell anyone who will listen why everything else is ugly and or junk. They are in "the club" for that particular car and all speak the same language and conform rigidly to what ever their "people" tell them they must think. I assume they have no life outside of a hobby car. Pretty sad really. And a little creepy. Stepford carguys.

3. I like weird stuff. I would rather have a 1959 Olds 4 door any day over one of the same old same old "popular" cars.I'd rather see a Gremlin or a Karmann Ghia at a car show than another Camaro or Nova. I like rat/traditional rods. And I like those guys. They kinda hate mainstream cars and car guys too.

And I like you guys. You guys are real CAR guys.

Whew. Fingers hurt.

Why do you have a G3? Empty Re: Why do you have a G3?

Post by pila Sat Jan 28, 2017 10:57 pm

Since I'm a geezer ( just don't call me that to my face) and I'm 85, I started a long time ago.  My first car was a '34 Chevy 2-door sedan. Didn't keep that one very long !  The next one, (1950) was a 1937 Lincoln Zephyr coupe--flat head V12. I managed to wreck that one Sad   The next one was a 1940 Lincoln, a Club Coupe, with a V12, which I later replaced with a flat head Ford engine. Had that car for many years with driving it.  In '51 I bought a '41 Cadillac 62 series sedan.  A wonderful car, with the 346 cubic inch flat head Caddy engine, and the in-destructable 3-speed Cad/Lasalle  transmission.
I sold that one when I went into the military in '52, for 3 years.
When I got out, I bought a new "55 Olds 88.  It was a good car, and I rode it hard !!   Next was another Cadillac, then in '59 I bought a new '59 Pontiac Catalina, first year for the 389 engine.  Had that car for 7 years, but rebuilt the engine to 401 cubic inch, cam & lifters from the 340 horse version etc, and rebuilt the transmission, which was the 4-speed "Jetaway" 2-coupling converter type. Finally traded that one for another Caddy Coupe Deville. During these years, I built up a '40 Ford coupe w/Olds engine, a'40 Ford pickup, wit a Caddy engine, and a '46 Studebaker coupe, with an Olds engine.
Then, I did what I should have done earlier..I divorced my first wife !! Very Happy Very Happy  Very Happy
My next car, believe it or not , was a '63 Ford Fairlane, 2-door, which was actually a nice car, with the first generation of their Small block, the little 221 cubic inch engine.
Then, in 1975 I flew a Grumman Albatross from Michigan, to Texas, I took my girl friend along, now my wife .. I bought my first El Camino in Texas, a '73 that was 2 yeas old. After that, no more except GM Stuff.    New Elco Classic in 1977, and added another one, a '76 El Camino SS.  SO that one was #3, and my current one, a ground up resto, is a '75. As far as the G3s, I had a '73 Chevelle  some years ago, and still have my '74 Mailbu Classic since 1990.  Some folks don't like the 4th gen El Caminos,  but they happen to be my favorite, along with the G3 Chevelles.

In fact, I'm driving my '75 Caddy powered Elco right now, enjoying all that tire-smokin' torque !! Very Happy  It's getting the winter shake-down !

Oh, this is an easy question to answer!

I had a G3 because I grew up with one ... the car that started my automotive "love affair". I was somewhat devastated when I searched for that car my parents had ("my" '76mc) & discovered it had been junked just shortly before I started the search. Sad

So, when the '76mc I owned for a while came along ... I couldn't pass on it, considering the mother of a friend of a church member owned it & was selling it only because she had to, even though I "swore" I'd never get black.

My dad bought a '73 malibu new as his first new car. Navy blue with baby blue top & interior. 307 with a/c. The car was jinxed right out the door as he hit a deer with it within the first week. It was wrecked three more times before he sold it for a new '78 Catalina. He sold it to a friend who rolled it on the freeway & almost died. Anyway to answer the question, when I was a kid these were the car of choice at the circle track (still kinda are) and I loved there look & wanted a street version.

The Stepford thing just seemed to fit. I have conversations with some of those guys and it just creeps me out.

My late FIL had a street rod. Those guys spend tens of thousands of dollars on 20s-50s cars that have to be painted like they picked the color out of a Starburst package, with ONLY this type of wheel an that type of engine. They all walk around saying "real steel, real steel" like parrots. Any car built after 1954 sucks. They also seem required to wear a uniform. Straw hat/ball cap with car related logo. Jeans shorts, white socks with running shoes, street rod related Tshirt or horrible Hawaiian/camp shirt with car logo.

Mustang guys seem to be broken into generations. 65-70 and 71-73 and anybody else sucks. But you are only ELITE if you have a fastback "name car" like the bosses, machs or Shelby. And you have to clean your car with a q-tip and win trophies or you suck.
Uniform similar to above but must have at least TWO mustang logos present.

Jeep guys have to have a Wrangler and it MUST be lifted. You have to use the words "rig" and "wheelin" as much as possible or you suck and/or you are a *****. Anything other than a CJ,TJ,YJ jeeps sucks. And you MUST do the "jeep wave" whenever you see a fellow "Jeeper". They do NOT acknowledge any other Jeep exists, including the newer JK wrangler models which they call "mall crawlers"
Uniform: Jeep logo ball cap with some sort of camo clothing.

Many of the traditional/rat rod guys must conform to a minimum number of tattoos, force their girlfriends to dress like Betty Boop and and listen to Rock-a-billy music or they will be flogged. They also seem to require white walls and only 2-3 types of wheels, not to mention drum brakes.
Uniform: White/black t-shirt or bowling league shirt, jeans rolled at bottom, sixties hair cut (Elvis or flat top) motorcycle boots, Converse Chucks optional

Weird.

Maybe we should come up with some kind of rules to be G3ers. Like we must wear vintage leisure suits or that we should all have a mini disco ball hanging from the rear-view.Very Happy

"Maybe we should come up with some kind of rules to be G3ers. Like we must wear vintage leisure suits or that we should all have a mini disco ball hanging from the rear-view."

If the car is in A1 original condition, there must be period correct music playing from the 8-track. Since it is kinda hard to locate good tapes, this will be the divide for "upper crust". The show costume will be anything with a houndstooth pattern, big collars, bell bottoms, and must be made of polyester so you can set up one hell of a static shock on some unsuspecting fool.

Modified or in-work vehicles obviously may have any number of things screwed up with it. This can include having a Pontiac engine in an Olds body. Because obviously the factory only did it the other way around.

The modified car owner (40 yrs +) costume would have a mullet or bald top with what's left being long so when you wear your ball cap it looks like you have a mullet. (less than 40) Costume will require obvious tattooing that makes people without wonder how you kept a job, and explains to them why you couldn't afford a "proper" hot rod.
Clothing (any age) must be grunge-like and/or shredded with backward ballcap with either/both shirt and ballcap references to any heavy metal band from the 70's to present. Music will be consistent with the costume theme. Those who play boy bands will be ostracized.

Lowriders, Donks, other styles don't have rules. Just...whatever. Puff-puff-pass, dude.Smoking

If anyone wants an 8-track, I think I still have one !!

The '73 Elco was my first G3,, and they just seem to fit me like no other, like the controls in them are second nature to me !!
A bit after midnight, this morning, I took my Elco to the gas station, about 5 miles away, on a snow-covered highway, with blowing snow etc, and I felt right at home with driving it, and the way it behaved on a wintry night ! First time I've had it out at night ! And my rewired, with relays, performance lamps etc, head lights, were super !! Very Happy

First G3 was my grandparents 75 Malibu Classic. Grandpa ordered it new and they only drove it when not on the road camping. I bought it from them in 1980 with 1500 miles on it. Too bad I was young and stupid. Traded it for a motorcycle. Loved that car so when the chance came I bought the 77 on my 75 only thing I would have changed was the headlights. I liked the square stacked lights. Now I have the best of both with the lights and same body lines. I have always liked being the only one at car shows and cruise ins. Thats why the fleet has grown with the addition of the 67 AMC, and the 74 Buick dont see these every day. Like being the loanwolf.

Soundtrack?

Boston, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Led Zep, Bad Co., etc etc .

Can't do Disco...even now. Not in public anyway.
Any G3 heard playing Disco would be relegated to "loser" status and be forced to park with 68-72 Chevelles where they would be subjected to an endless loop of "The American Graffiti" Soundtrack, like most car shows.

My reason is pretty simple. It was the first car my Dad bought new about 8 months after I was born. It became my first car when I got my license and I drove it all over South Central Texas. I still love that car. It went back to my Dad for a bit, but he never sold it. It's been in the family the whole time, and now it's my time to do a little restoration and drive the piss out of it again.

That's the plan my friend. My son is 17 and he's already helped me work on it a little and wants to do more. I'm just trying to do my part keeping the car culture, and classics in general, alive in the younger generation. He wants a project car of his own and would really love a late 60s Impala. I had been looking for a car for about a year. My brother in law who's a classic car guy had been sending me almost daily links to cars he had seen online that he'd thought I might be interested in. He's a member at the Canadian Pancho site and another member there had the S3 and needed to sell fast. It was nearby; I went, I drove, I bought. My first car was a G3 and this car fit well for what I wanted and was under the budget I had allowed for.

Pic of 67 AMC required. Marlin? Rambler? Rebel?
