A/C Leak Empty A/C Leak

Post by Hawk03 Mon May 22, 2017 10:04 pm

I was charging my A/C this weekend everything was going okay until I noticed a leak under the passenger firewall while the system was running. None of the hoses or pipes were leaking in the engine bay so I'm thinking the leak from the condensor? or something in the box on the firewall. I don't remember how it is constructed inside and I'm guessing to remove it I would need to remove the fender, ugh.

The evaporater just sits inside that box. If I remember right you can get the drivers side of the box out if you remove the exhaust manifold or the passenger side of the box by removing the inner fender. Not sure which would be easier. Some of the screws are removed from under the dash inside the car.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong cuz its been a year since I was under there.

Thanks! Its been a while for me too, lol. I forgot you could remove the inner fender by itself which I think should be pretty easy. I think the headers should be pretty easy to remove as well.

Is there a best source to purchase new parts from? What parts would I need to purchase (condenser/evaporator)? I don't have a diagram of what is all inside the box and my memory is a little fuzzy.

I don't know about getting parts. My ac isn't working yet and I need some parts too. Haven't gone down that road yet. Rockauto?
Ps it's the evaporater in the box. The condenser is in front of the radiator. I corrected my earlier post for confusion.

Are you referring to water leaking out of the evaporator casing on the firewall? Or are talking about a refrigerant leak?

Refrigerant leak. It's clear and the leak only appears when I turn on the A/C.

The refrigerant is a gas so I can only assume that its refrigerant oil that you are seeing leaking from the evaporator box. That would indicated a massive leak in your system that would not hold pressure for more than a few minutes. Are you sure its not water from condensation from the evaporator?

I'm pretty sure its not water, the liquid felt oily so it must have been refrigerant oil. I didn't have much time to look into the issue before I had to travel back to Indiana. The compressor would only run for about a minute or two before it shut off. My guess is that the pressure would be there once the system was activated then would shut off once the leak started. I ordered a new evaporator and I will have my dad take it to his friends to work on. Not sure if the evaporator is bad but thought I would buy a new once just in case so we shouldn't have to take the case off again.
