To box or not to box it? Empty To box or not to box it?

Post by Hs1973 Sat Oct 21, 2017 11:30 am

Hi guys. Im in the process of mounting a rear swaybar to my chevelle, wich is easy enough but while im at it should i use the time and box the the trailing arms as they are off the car. Is there any risk that the lower arms could be weak from the holes drilled to mount the swaybar, or is it not worth the effort at all. I dont dragrace it or autocross etc. Just weekend Cruise and take a scalp once in a while. All advise is welcome.

Regards from Copenhagen.

If your not using the factory insert to mount the bar, then I would box them. Some people opt to just put sleeves in the middle of the arms for the bolts to pass through. I'm not a fan of that.

Thanks guys. I have the factory inserts but it seems to me that the rest of the arm is a little week to look at compared to the beefy inserts. So Boxing it is.

I didn't box mine, but I did weld the factory brackets in them, as well as using the factory bolts to mount them. So far, no problem, with my torque monster up front ! Smile
But I also welded some gussets on the mounts for the lower bars, on the frame, and the frame braces that some folks here put me onto.

What kind of framebrace are you talking of. Do you by any chance have any pictures ? Im always interested in things that improve performance. Is it something like the original bars up front.

Basically a good idea is to gusset the front rear lower control arm mount. It just sits next to the frame. You can weld a piece and triangulate it to keep it from cracking off the frame.

Or you can use the Disk Miller Racing support bar and triangulate the upper and lower arms.

No welding.....bolt on.

I'm with Ray on this one. I've ripped that brace off my frame a couple times. I didnt gusset it on my current build but I am using the edit Miller bars this time around.

I twisted the factory lower arms with the original engine when I was 16... No reason not to box them. I've got some solid aluminum ones now and the Miller bolt in supports.

The frame braces I have in there are from Global... I'm not sure if the Elco frame is any more robust back there, than a Chevelle ....

Yep yep yep. Box them but NOT the uppers. Something has to flex in the suspension. Leave the upper bushings all rubber and the control arm open. All that leverage on the outside can lead to cracking on the upper control arm mounts on the frame if they're all hard bushings.
