Hey...was wondering what the ration is how many turns lock to lock is factory, and what is a good ratio in a quick steering box?

transam/camaro from the 74 to 81 era is a good replacement

This is what I run in my white 73, and I can say it's the best upgrade the car has and absolutely worth the cost. I'll install one in all my Montes eventually. I have the 670, which is brand new and contains rack and pinion internals. Unbelievable steering response now. The 12.7:1 ratio gives me 2 1/2 turns lock to lock on my steering wheel. The factory box is about 17:1 and more than 4 turns lock to lock.

IM running the same Jeep Grand Cherokee box as above. 12.7:1 ratio with a 43 degree radius. Also is fixed ratio and 20-26 pounds of effort.

I like it alot better than my 15-17:1 varible ratio 43 degree box but I wish the JGC box had more effort, its still too easy to turn.

The 73 SS has the factory 13-15:1 varible ratio box but i think its a 40 degree

If I find a quicker ratio steering box from an early 70s Camaro, will the lines match right up with the lines in my 73 Chevelle?

Yeah any of the older boxes have the same fittings. It's the newer boxes that have metric fittings, you can buy them seperately and adapt them to work

You can change the amount of pressure the pump produces via adding or removing washers in the high pressure fitting at the back of the pump.


These guys mod for more flow and pressure, but all you would need is to add a shim or two to reduce pressure to get the feel you like in the wheel.
