Look at the pic on your avatar. Your #1 should be just left of where the air filter screw is pointing depending on how you set the dizzy in there. It's on the front side of the motor & the rotation is clockwise. You'll know if you get it off by one.

It dont matter, Set the distributor in without the cap, make sure its fully seated with the oil pump shaft engauged. Turn the motor till its on number one top dead center firing order (number six cylinder should have both rockers pushing down a tad while number one is both loose) Then look to see where the rotor on the dis is pointing, Set the cap down and figure out which post on cap its closest to, usually make sure the post is a couple degrees before (counterclockwise) to give the timing some advance. That post is your number one then.
When you fire it up make sure to have a timing light hooked up and get it up to about 38* total timing without advance. Then when you run it at the track youll figure out what the motor wants by the trap speed.

ideally, the spot where the #1 terminal lines up with the distributor body should point towards the #1 spark plug.
