wheel bearings
What size are the front wheel bearings on our cars? Are try different sizes depending on the year? I'm looking at brake kits but they have different options depending on the wheel bearing size

Damn. I don't remember. Here's the number to the Autozone right off cooper call and ask them (817) 557-9811. Since they have bearings in stock for our cars, they should be able to tell you what size they are.Blue442 wrote:What size are the front wheel bearings on our cars? Re: wheel bearings
I forgot I could check autozone's website. The inner bearings are set6 and the outer are set2. With a little search I found out that set2 are 0.750" which was what I mainly needed to know.
Kore3's kit requires cutting the casting for the factory caliper mount. I hate to cut without a backup. I guess I could get a new spindle. Are they hard to find?

Re: wheel bearings
spindles should be easy to find, since 70-81 F bodies and 77-96 B bodies use the same spindle. if you are upgrading to 12" brakes, then you just need to find a set of B body spindles from a wagon or cop car, or any 90-96 spindle, since they all have 12" brakes. get a rotor for a '90-92 1LE Camaro and it all bolts together and allows you to use your stock wheels or any other wheel with the 5X4.75 bolt pattern. the only curveball you might not like would be the metric wheel studs, but those can be swapped out for some SAE threaded studs with the same knurl diameter.
one other option that works on paper is to get the B body 12" brake spindle and use an early 80's 1/2 ton 2wd pickup HD rotor and matching calipers- it is 12"X1.25", which is beefier than the 12"X1" B body rotors. but the truck rotor will have a bigger center diameter and 1/2" studs on a 5X5 bolt circle. swap in a set of early 80's Caprice wagon rear axles and drums, and you've got the 5X5 bolt pattern with 1/2" studs all around.
whatever you do, the spindles to get are the 94-96 B body spindles- they are lighter and stronger than the earlier parts. but they require the lower balljoint that was used in the car they came from.

Re: wheel bearings
Could you use the 1LE camaro calipers as well?
I ask because they are dual piston aluminum calipers.

Re: wheel bearings
My plan was to use corvette c5 brakes. Of course this means that I have to run at least a 17" wheel.

Re: wheel bearings
Yeah, but the extra braking power will be worth it though.

Re: wheel bearings
Just wanted to add that Asto/Safari spindles also work. Same spindles with the larger ball joints.
