Black suede would look nice, but how hot will it make your car in the summer? Serious question here, I don't know if using leather is gonna affect anything. Would look bada$$ if done right though. If you are getting rid of the dome light, why not run the wiring to the rearview mirror & upgrade to a newer style rearview with individual lights for each side? That should be an easy trick to save you in case you need the light.

I have a couple different mirrors to try and get to work.My dome light wires are toast, and I was going to put the cutlass opera lights on the sides by the opera windows and have the r-v mirror. I am still himhawin whether or not to put one of the power moon roofs I have on my car.

Re: headliners
the moon roof would be sick! I'm planning on doing that if my buddy can find me a moon roof! I would love to get one from a 78-80 Cadillac Coupe Deville, or a 78-79 Lincoln Continental.
