3.73 vs 4.11

Post by denard52 on Tue May 11, 2010 7:36 am

Hello, I was wondering if I could get you guys opinion on which rear gears to go with. Currently I still have the stock gears in (i believe they are 2.73's) and I can't stand it. I would like to smoke the tires from time to time but these gears will not allow that to happen. I have a 350 in it with a TH350. I have a set of 22" x 11" rims on the back with a total height of 29" including the tire. Right now it's more geared for the highway but i would like to wake it up off the line with some smokey burnouts. Any thoughts?

350/350 combo, you could go with either. Be warned that your top speed will be limited with 4.10's. My brother has those in his truck & it's SCRRREEEAAMING at 85-90 mph. Really hard to say which gears to go with unless we know more about the car. Engine specs, car's primary purpose, & even driving conditions can change my mind on which gears to choose.

Thanks, unfortunately I don't have much on the engine it came with the car and the guy I bought it from only said it had a mild cam. Wasn't to concern with the engine when I bought it because I had plans to replace it with a 400. But the engine swap will get pushed to the winter but I would still like to wake the car up for now. It also has a 2500 RPM stahl in it.

Primary use is driving around town, I don't do too much highway driving, if so it's for short periods of time. I am more of a drag racer's so top speed I'm not really interested in.

with your tire being 29" right now your gears are actually around the 2.50 range and not the 2.73...............If you are gonna keep the 29" tire I would most definitely go with the 4.10 gears for the tire height you are running will drop it back down to a 3.70 gear anyways you will be very happy with it.

Yeah, Limey is right. If all you wanna do is burn some rubber to make some noise, then go back to 14 inch tires with the stock diameter of 25 or 26 inches. If you want to be serious on the street with a 350, go with a 27 inch diameter tire. Personally I like the 273 gears from the factory with posi but dont like the 2.56 gears. JB

I hear ya, but I'm partial to the larger wheels filling up the wheel wells. But as always thanks for your advice!!!

I am running a 350/350 combo with 3.73 gears and 15x7 wheels with 245/60-15 tires. I am turning about 4000rpm @ 60mph and am getting 10mpg. The engine has a Comp Cams XE268H Cam with .477/.480-inch lift and am running a 2500-stall converter.

Thats a lot of cam for a 350. I have a little bigger Comp roller cam than that, but the big blocks can take a lot more cam than a 350 without affecting daily operation. I have a 2300 stall converter with 3.42 rear gears and I turn 3,000 RPMs at 60 with 27 inch tall tires. JB

Once helped build a 355 that had a cam with 244 deg @.050 on a 104 deg LCA & it would idle down to 1000 RPM. Sounded wicked.... Smoking

Loose the clown car 22's and get some reg rims and 3.73's 4.11 are too low unless you are racing 1/8th mile.
