well even though i am still in the gathering parts stage i will post up what i plan to do for an engine.


the block is a 1968-1969 olds 350 virgin block only has .003" of bore where with no ring ridge. i am going to bore it to 4.125" or .068" over

Pistons the reason for the over bore they will be flat top standard bore chevy 400 pistons

rods forged I-beam 6.2" chevy rods. this will get the piston close to a zero deck

crank is a nodular steel crank with the rod jurnals ground down to a 2.100" chevy rod i will leave the standard stroke of 3.375 to get 362 ci

heads will be milled C heads with the rocker pedistals milled .100 to use adjustable rockers also will get the exhuast side cleaned up and the heat cross over filled. witht he zero deck, flat top, and a .029 steel shim head gasket i will only need to mill the heads enough to drop the chamber 3cc to get a 77cc chamber size to get 10.06:1 compretion

cam will be a Lunati 318A3LUN 221/230 duration @ .050 .485/.485 lift 112 LSA 106 ICL installed 2* retarded for a ICL of 108

Harlen Sharp RR with a 1.7:1 ratio for a .512/.512 lift

Performer RPM intake

and the largest set of headers they make for a SBO in a 73-77 A-body.... still need to research that


basicly trying to do it for cheap friend made me a bet i could not do it from under $4,000 so far with used parts i am under $3,000 including machine work Very Happy and enigne anylizer is saying around 420hp @6,000 and 425 FT-LBS @4500 with full exhuast and full accesorys. i take this with a grain of salt though i have noticed it is off + or - 10% on actual out put in past uses. but still i find that impressive for what it is

i have the heads, block crank, intake, and rods, pistons are on there way then i can get the machine work done. still trying to figure out a carb, i like the idea of a spread bore for throttle response and cruising fuel econemy (also the RPM is set up for both squar and spread bore carb)

BBO and SBO headers are pretty much the same and i pulled my 455 out of my 69 442, put it in the 77 cutlass, headers fit fine. you just have to jack the car up to get the pass side on. Anyways looks like a great combo cant wait to hear more

Sounds like a good build. How close to zero deck are you? If you have a little wiggle room, I'd offset grind the crank to gain just a little more stroke. Hey gotta get those extra cubic inches in there right? LoL

Seriously though this sounds like a fun motor when it's finished. Keep us updated.

tell me more about the jacking car up could I leave my engine in just jack up the one side ???

with the 6.2" rods about .010" in the hole. if i got 6" rods i could of offset ground it for a 3.5" stroke for a 375ci but i all ready have the rods. if i off set it .010 i could get a 363


but you are saing older A-body headers fit?

yess 66-77 should fit not sure about 64 and 65. my 77 cutlass i jacked up the whole front of the car and put the pass side in from underneath, i messed with it b4 jackin it up for like an hour then the light bulb went off. it was hitting the lower control arm and the tranny so i got it pretty high up in the air, went in like a glove. and yes leave the motor and tranny in

sweet will try that tomorrow and what about drivers side ?? same thing or easier fit for that side ??

easier fit, i thought it would be worse with the steering column, so i did it first they went right in then i had fun strugglin with the pass side
