Spark Plug Recomendations for HEI Empty Spark Plug Recomendations for HEI

Post by Oidar Fri Oct 10, 2008 11:35 am

I've got a NEW HEI distributor from eBay and I want to put in fresh plugs when I change it out.

I know there are different plugs for a '74 (point ignition) and '75 (HEI) so do I just tell them it's a '75 at the parts counter?

Also, is there a particular brand / type that's best? I've heard people say those split-fire jobs are good.

My engine is the original (sleepy) 350 2bbl. Compression is good on 7, but 1 is a little soft. Probably getting some blow-by on that one so I'm concerned about fouling.

If you are getting blowby, I highly recommend going with an NGK. It's the only thing that will still fire when it's really really gunked up.

Just tell your parts guy to crossreference your current plug to the same NGK v-groove plug and you will not be disappointed.

You can open up the gaps a little further with the HEI, but I think the heat range will be about the same depending on how gunked up the chambers are. Maybe start with a 32-35 gap.

Next time you need to add oil, add a quart of ATF and run it normal for a few days. Next oil change, add a quart of Lucas Oil Stabilizer (not synthetic). It will help you out with those rings.

just get the stock plugs for your car- AC R45TS, most likely. open the gaps up to about .045 or so and screw them in.
