Obsolete jobs...
http://msn.careerbuilder.com/Article/MSN-2408-Job-Info-and-Trends-10-Obsolete-Jobs-We-Love/?SiteId=cbmsnhp42408&sc_extcmp=JS_2408_home1>1=23000
MSN story about jobs that either no longer exist or will soon be obsolete. Like the old milkman or gas station pump jockey.
I thought it was interesting because Louisville was a huge manufacturing city at one time with two Furd plants, GE, cigarette companies etc etc.
Automation and technology have replaced tons of people at all of them.
General Electric, for example, used to emply something like 8000 people here back in the 70s. But now less than 1000 folks work there.
Furd has probably half of their former workforce, largely due to robots doing what used to be a persons job.

Obsolete job? The President
Up in Evansville, IN there used to be a huge GM factory. An entire city practically sprung up around it. Now all they have left is a tiny little Delphi automotive plant run by a few hundred people. The whole town's kinda falling apart.

We have a ton of people here that are cutting grass who probably would have worked in manufacturing years ago.
Other jobs probably going the way of blacksmith....
Printing company jobs
Newspaper jobs
Photo industry
Kinda spooky.

Photo industry would be safe. Not everyone is a professional, but sooner or later, everyone needs a professional.
Iceman is obsolete? Ummm, not really if you think about it. I've went to the store more times than I can think of this Summer just to pick up a bag of ice for the beer cooler or several bags for when I needed to stock up all of my coolers before a camping trip.
Door to door salesman...... One can only hope.
Number 8 is totally off too. I worked at Bagcraft for years making food wrappers. Yeah, I don't think fast food chains will stop using up paper & I can guarantee that this field won't decrease. There's just too many functions that a person has to do to keep the machine running including paper web breaks, keeping ink & glue filled, switching & setting up full rolls of paper AFTER you take a box knife to open the roll & unwrap it, pulling paper off of the machine, sealing, putting into the box, putting box on skid, wrapping skid, sending the skid out, etc. Not to mention the people that make the plates for each design & then having to set the plates up on the machine. Maintenance is a constant thing in the paper industry.

Re: Obsolete jobs...
Digital photography has already killed off huge portions of that industry, when's the last time you dropped off some film at Kodak?
Magazines are dropping like flies, but gong digital as well.
I think a lot will still be around for a while, but on a much smaller scale.
The sad part is that $20 an hour jobs are only being rplaced by $10 an hr jobs around here, if they get replaced at all...

$20 an hour around here is living fat. I don't know of but a few jobs that have ever paid that much. The average household income is only $34k & the per capita is $17k a year. Figure that one up & you'll see my town's average wages are about $8.20/hr per person. Can you say cheap cost of living?

I wish that was the case around here..I make about $15 an hour as a entry level tech at Pep Boys and im still barely getting by..of course when you pay $1,600 a month for an APARTMENT 15 an hour is nothing..everytime i hear someone talk about what they pay for a house out of state i wanna cry because for $1,600 a month i could get a huge house in some other areas.

My area for 1600 a month would get you a 5 bedroom house with about 6 to 10 acres of land

In my area you could also throw in a 2 car garage, privacy fence, & in ground pool with all utilities paid on top of Limey's & still probably not hit $1,600.

Just you wait! Someone will invent a robot that hosts funerals, then disposes of the body, whilst counceling the family of the deceased, all while never sleeping, eating, quitting, or getting depressed!
Man, sad to think that could happen...

Railroad isn't a bad job, If you can stand people who have never ever done your job, don't know a railroad tie from a F***ing box car tell you how you should do your job.
