A half an hour ago, I paid 3.88 a gallon for regular 87 at a local Marathon station. It's down about a dime a gallon since yesterday. Our 100LL av-gas is now way over 5 bucks a gallon. Maybe I wont be using that in my Malibu this year !! It sure likes it though....

I've been tweaking my 77 for mileage, up from an astounding 9mpg on the road when I got it to a semi-respectable 14mpg pulling commuter duty. rebuilt the carb, adjusted it to an inch of its life and a new fuel pump, set the timing by ear rather than follow the recommended base timing of 8 degrees, it runs about 12.

All said and done, 14 in town and about 20mpg on the road thanks to the somewhat thrifty 305, the boat-anchor two barrel, and the freeway friendly 2.56 rear end, coupled with a turbo-350. Heck today was the first time I've been able to drive it 300 miles on a tank, we'll see when I finally fill it up (ouch.)

If I am not mistaken, Gas has started rising due to the end of winter and the beggining of summer "driving season". It has reached 3.79 in my local areas. Good old New Hampshire seems pretty low compared to many other places..

It's creeped to 3.84 here, time to drive the Explorer and let the '77 sleep in the garage a while.

Looks like a number of states are realizing the potential lost revenues from the electric car and higher mileage compacts. Our esteemed DOT is studying the feasibility of a mileage tax on everyone. Early proposals are a 3-cent tax per mile in the metro area during peak driving hours and 1-cent the rest of the time and all other parts of the state. Their argument is that this will eventually replace the state gas tax...but, we all know that is a bunch of bunk! Besides, I have serious doubts the electric car will be embraced by more than a handful of people up here in the Northland and actual lost revenues will be negligible.

My wife just told me that it's $4.16 & 9 tenths at the local station today, for 87 regular.

And she was pissed !

All I know is that these high gas prices should sufficiently kill any hope of an economic turnaround.
