Oops...

Post by chevy76monteman on Tue Apr 19, 2011 4:40 pm

Well after a good night of racing at P.I.R. on Saturday, I had just finished packing my stuff up that I brought to the track and shut my driver's side door on the Monte. The window decided to shatter into a million pieces. Since my hinges and latch is crapped up on the door, I have had to slam the door to get it to shut for quite a while now. I guess the window finally had enough. Thankfully, I had a spare window so the next day a friend and I put it in. Here's a picture of the carnage.

It definitely startles a person when these things shatter! Last summer, I was lifting the tailgate glass on a '93 Caprice wagon and I apparently lifted it a little too high. It exploded into a million pcs and scared the h--l out of me.

your plastic guide that keeps the window in place when closed is also broken. that might have put additional stress on it as well.you should replace that, its only like 10$ part.

Good spot on the plastic window guide. These are almost always broken after all the years.

As for having to slam your door shut, I don't think the solution is to raise the hinges. Open your door and lift up on it from the back. If there is anything more than slight movement, your hinges are probably just plain worn out. You can buy a hinge pin repair kit...or, maybe find some new hinges.

Yikes, Dustin. Hope you didn't get cut!

My '81 MC SC did that to me when it was still my parents' car, shortly after I got my license. Except, I hadn't slammed the door ... it just simply shattered when I closed it. Very scary. I had a few cuts, too.
