transmission crossmember

Post by bigblackcat on Thu Apr 28, 2011 12:00 pm

I recently found a dual exhaust crossmember from a 74 chevelle. I want to install it
under my 77 malibu estate wagon. I read a posting on ebay that someone was selling
the same crossmember and stated that it will not fit the wagons or el camino's. is this
true???? Will this same crossmember work for a four speed transmission???

I can't say for sure about the fitting of the x-member, but Chevelle frames are different from El Camino and Station Wagon frame.

The El Camino has a boxed frame so is not as wide for the chevelle one to my Knowledge .......and I believe it wil fit 4 speeds with some mods

Why not just take some measurements off your wagon? I just pulled a dual hump off a '73 Chevelle and it measures about 52 1/2" O.A.L. Mtg holes about 51 1/4" ctr-to-ctr. Couldn't tell ya about it fitting a 4-spd. I just went through this at the yard today to try finding info in the Hollander manual. They didn't have any cross-reference info whatsoever that we could find.

okay so i just pulled one off a 74 gmc sprint and it measures 47 1/2 from
outside to outside.....and 45 inches from center to center on the mounting holes. Guess that answers my question!!!! Very Happy

I'VE USED TH350'S TH400'S 700R4'S MUNCIE'S AND BW T-10'S WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS OR MODIFICATIONS DONE TO THE CROSSMEMBER.

I used a '73 Chevelle cross member in my '77 El Camino, and I have a '74 Chevelle part in my '75 El Camino. They both fit fine. I didn't know there was a difference (?)

I just replaced a cross member in my son's Furd Crown Vic which was rusted bad on one end, and it looked like it would fit an A body, and it has the double "hump" . I still have the rusty one, so I'll have to measure it's length. He paid 30 bucks for a nice used one from a former cop car. If it can be used, why not !
