POR 15 Empty POR 15

Post by wokrdan AKA BU Balls Tue May 17, 2011 1:04 am

So word on the street is POR 15 is the best thing to put on a frame to minimize rusting. I'm gonna blast the frame, but should I use a primer, or just put this stuff right on? Also, how much would be needed to cover a frame (i.e. quart or gallon)? Is there a kit, or which products do I need to buy to do this? How many coats need to be applied? Anyone who has used this stuff, I could definitely use some advice. Also, where is the cheapest place to find it?

If you can find some at a local or fairly close paint store, you will save shipping of course. Check for a store location online if you can. The last quart I bought was like 33 bucks, but that was a while back. There are likely directions on the can to answer your questions. Maybe someone here can add some info about it also.

You cant just leave it bare. It has no UV protection you have to top coat it after it dries or it will not hold up. THey sell a top coat as well and a little of it goes a long way.

I hate to disagree, but POR 15 stands for "paint over rust" and you say you will blast the frame. I believe a better product in this case is Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator. I have bought it in ther spray cans to do my frame, if I ever get around to it. JB

I have used POR... if you're blasting the frame then you can squirt or brush it on directly, it evens pretty good with a brush. Be careful to only pour out what you need then put the lid back on, if you leave it off, it will harden up on you. When you do put the lid back on, put a piece of saran wrap over the can, then put the lid on, or you may never get the lid back off. 1 coat is good if brushing, but you will have to go over it to make sure you didn't miss any spots.

You do not need the topcoat on the frame. it is under the car and usually does not get direct sunlight, if your frame is in direct sunlight you may have some other pressing issues that you may want to worry about. I have it on both my car frames and no issues yet. One's been on there close to 10 years.

I would think 1 to 2 quarts should do your frame. Stir it with a stick and not a shaker. Make sure you wear gloves, if it dries on your skin, it will need to wear off. The SG Black is great for a frame.

The stuff JB brought up is good stuff too, it comes in a spray can where POR doesn't.

POR-15® is sensitive to UV light (sun) and must be topcoated for prolonged exposure to sunlight.
Topcoating is not required for areas not exposed to sunlight.

You are wasting your money if you dont top coat it .It dosen hold up at all to any sun light (like the little bit of the frame that shows under the body just under the door).Just scuff it and cover with some rustoleum if you dont want to go for their product.
