Might even want to get a solenoid from a f o r d and mount a remote solenoid so you don't have to worry about frying another one for a while. Starter wrap would work too though.

A remote Furd type solenoid only really reduces the wiring to the starter. You still need the starter mounted solenoid to actually do the work.
But, you only need to run the big hot wire to the starter.
Make sure you have an airgap between the starter and any exhaust. If they are touching, it will run for awhile, and then won't start. I had a little stepside pickup with hooker headers and they actually rubbed on the starter housing. A little pry bar action on the tubes and it was good to go.
Fix one thing and then its something else...

The headers are close, but not rubbing, I touched the starter when I couldn't start it, and the thing was on fire! Just because of the heat near the headers warms up the starter so much

Re: Trying to Cool my 454....agian
I wrapped my original starter with a heat shield years ago and didn't have any issues. If you can pick up a mini starter, it will get it away from the headers even more.

Re: Trying to Cool my 454....agian
I put the heat wrap around the starter, drove the sh*t out of it ( like always ) stopped and touched the starter, it was surprising cooler!
