Original dealer license plate frame.

Post by 74MonteCarlo on Wed Jul 20, 2011 10:38 am

I finally tracked down an original metal dealership license plate frame, from the original dealer my Monte came from in 1974. Art Moehn Chevrolet in Jackson, MI. I scoured eBay, Craigslist, Google, forums - found nothing. I resorted to none other than FACEBOOK. I went on their page, posted a picture of my car, and said it was bought there brand new in 1974, and could anyone help me to find an original plate frame. Well, a fella named Chris replied. He is the internet manager of the dealer, and he is also Art Moehn's grandson, and lives in Art's old house. Well...he dug through the garage and found one! Mailed it to me, and didn't want anything for it - a super nice guy, indeed! It polished up great and looks kick A$$ with my authentic 1974 Michigan plate.

Original dealer license plate frame

That's very cool, Kyle! Mine still has the original Dealer decal...but, no license plate frame. Visited Pierz, MN (Nagel Chevrolet) years ago and unfortunately, the dealership was closed.

Thanks fellas.

Art Moehn is still open, obviously. However, its not at the same location it was in 1974. But, the family still owns that old building.

Michigan did NOT have stamped year 1974 plates. You kept the 1973 plate, and put the "74" sticker in the corner. Same for "75" sticker. Then, in 1976 a special red, white & blue bicentennial plate was issued. Sticker for "77" & "78". Then, in 1979 the stamped year plate was brought back. A couple years later they did away with the year plates like that.

Lol, even in MI, I get asked that A LOT. Or people don't even see the sticker and say it's a '73. In the 4 years I have had this car...of all the people that try to guess the year...about 5 have gotten it right. No joke, lol.
