If you have the 396, swap it out... You'll love it.

I've read the 400 motor has thinner cylinder walls than a 350 or 305 and can crack with too big a bore. Not sure if it's true maybe someone else can confirm that? Nice job on your car.

Because of the siamezed cylinders unique to the 400 engine, this is true. I forget if .060 is safe, but .030 is. I believe the story is if you really want to chance it, .060 can work about half the time. My memory is not what it used to be. Re: 396 bb 1975 lugna s-3
My '74 Malibu has a '70 400, which came from a station wagon. I ran it in an Elco for years, then rebuilt it again, @ .040" over now. Only thing is about those, is that they need a good cooling system, HD/AC radiator, and a big fan w/clutch. I have 350 rods in mine, and haven't ever used the stock 5.565" rods. Comp 280 Magnum cams in both rebuilds, with Rhoads lifters, for decent vacuum.
And it does have plenty of power & torque
My engine shop wont bore a 400 to .060" oversize, and I don't blame them
