Australia's "El- Camino"

Post by 77mali on Fri Nov 11, 2011 9:00 pm

This is the Holden (GM Australia) Ute. This one is modified but this is a current production car based on the "Zeta" platform. The only zeta in North America being produced by GM Canada is the Camaro. Wonder what they're waiting for? Has some body styling cues from el-camino of course but I see sprinkles of G body Monte in there too. Pretty cool car.

You're right! I got the zeta thing wrong I think. Maybe it was an older article I read when quoting. That means the Camaro is being built on the same platform as the new Bu's & Regals. I have yet to see a new Caprice police car but this is a good link. happy bowtie

The other cars that would ahve come on that chassis would have been amazing. There was talk of all the mid and full size cars on that chassis by 2010.that was back in 06. Then the S*&t hit the fan and that was all changed.
I saw a document that a friend showed me that had at least the Monte Carlo/Impala and Grand Prix as well as a Buick model (no name) to get built on that chassis. Shame that it didnt happen.

I have been fighting for many years to get that Ute here. We almost had them at one time, but they changed their mind. JB

The Holden Ute is one of my favorite body styles.

Here is a brute from a Queensland race from awhile back:

They need to get them here. The Aussies are way ahead of us as far as GM goes. I don't think they are on the path we seem to be taking with our nonsensical environmental restrictions and the sheer BULL Turd with respect to alternative fuels & the new gas mileage standards coming down the pike. Instead of battery & gas powered hybrid cars they have chosen to go the route of gas w/ LPG secondary fuel systems. Way smarter, way cheaper & much more abundant. Stupid tree huggin' EPA.

Since the mini pickups scuttled the El Camino sales pretty much, the Ute wouldn't likely be a success here either. As far as the Ute replacing the classic El Caminos, they look too small (?) to actually haul anything.
When I built my house in the 80s, I had two El Caminos, a '76 SS, and a '77 Classic, in which I hauled everything for my house (two-story- 2200 sq ft) except the roof rafters.

Pila, those Utes are a lot bigger than they look like they are. JB

Pilas right, US wouldn't support the El Camino.
We're too busy buying Kias because they a cheap.

Utes have similar hauling capacity to an El Camino.

They even have direct injection on the six cylinder model.
It's a pretty cool car.
Too bad the importation isn't a little easier.
I would take a Redline SS Ute over a Camaro any day...
