This is what the new engine will look like. I used a different 454 to mock up parts and paint scheme. However, I'm having a change of heart. I purchased an Isky 262 adv. duration cam with a .490 lift. I was going to keep it stock, now I want to bump up compression and run a bigger cam. I have the 750 double pumper, Victor Jr. manifold, MSD ignition, 3000 stall convertor or a 2200 stall, to go with the cam upgrade. I just can't decide on what size to go with. Thinking about a 280 adv. duration, something around .520-.550 lift. The engine has flat top, 2 valve relief pistons, heads are 353049 oval ports w/2.19/1.88 valves. Machine shop says compression is around 9.1:1. I don't believe him and don't have the tools to verify. I'm thinking its closer to 8.5:1. Oh yeah, heads have 122 cc chambers. Can anyone offer any suggestions or running something similar?

Sorry forgot to mention the heads in pic are not oval ports, there are peanut port heads used just for mock up, the oval ports will be painted to match the engine and intake manifold. I thought I'd try something different and try some red header paint instead of black for the headers. I only painted one to see what it would look like. Still undecided.

If your compression is 8.5-9.1:1, I'd stay with the 262 cam because with the bigger cam and lower compression you'll probably have vacuum problems for the brakes. Also 2200 stall would be nice.

I am using comp cams XE 262 with my Vortec Heads & Manifold. Good for about 350 horses & 415 ft lbs or torque. Compression is 9.25:1

If I change to a smaller thickness head gasket and get ratio up to 9.5? Also vacuum situation will be addressed accordingly.

I have a 0.44 mil thick gasket & won't risk using anything thinner. The power in is the cam & heads. I don't think using a thinner head gasket will make that much difference in output.

I was told, using a .20 steel shim gasket will yield almost 3/4-1 full point increase in compression. But after researching some catalogs and the cam my machinist provided, I figure I could safely run a cam with a 230 degree adv.duration with lift around .550. Both cams specified the same comp.ratio my builder said so I think I'll be fine. Now, What brand? I won't run Comp. cams! I'm looking into Lunati, Isky, Crane, Crower, and Howards.

To each his own. The engine shop I used recommended Comp over everyone else & they've been around for 40 years.

I've noticed those thumpr cams favor the exhaust side a lot, Lunati claims they did that to give the sound of older muscle cars. I like the idea of it, but I'm favoring the Isky 284 duration .553 lift in the 2500-6000 rpm range. Are you close to installing your cam "driveit", I'd like to know how it runs and performs for you. I noticed its a roller cam, that's my other thought. Save up and upgrade to a roller cam. But its so expensive, damn near close to 800 dollars.

I would stay away from the Thumpr cams, they are for sound only. They do not run as well as a properly designed cam. Like was said, you are not going to see a drastic compression change from the head gasket. Use a good Fel Pro gasket. You can search for one that has the smallest bore, like a 4.37 I think they make. I have used Lunati cams in my street engines lately with good success. But before you do anything, I would try to get a real accurate measure on compression. 8.5-1 is a good possibility. But I have seen 454's with 230 duration cams be able to run in the 13's so there is potential. The Victor Jr is too much of an intake also. Stick to the performer RPM type for low end torque.

The 353049 oval port heads have been modified with port and polishing, and 2.19/1.88 valves. I ran the victor jr on a different 454 with a 230 dur. and 520 lift comp cam. So I'm going to use it with a Howard cams 231 dur. .533 lift. I'm going to do more checking to verify comp. ratio. As far as low torque, I'll be running a 4.10 gear, 29 in tall tire, and a 3000 stall.

I would look at one more like this.

I run the 60112 Lunati Voodoo roller in the 355 in the Nova.
