any four speed guys out there?

What are you running for a tranny? And what's your rearend gear ratio? Swapping mine to an M20. I'm looking for a good ratio to run in the rear. Something with some umph from a stop, but not to tall. Currently its a 2:73

I have a 4spd car. It car came with a 3.42 posi which I ran around for a couple of years. I now have a 4.10 monte rear in it. Car ran great with the 3.42 but spun about 2200 rpm on the highway. The 4.10 rear is spinning over 3k on the hwy so I dont recommend that. I've switched back and forth between a wide ratio (2.52) and a close ratio (2.20) box. Car runs much better with the wide box. Here's the best way I've found to have a "fun" to drive car. Take your first gear ratio of the trans and multiple it times your rear ratio. With the number "9" being the goal of a "fun" to drive car. So my current math comes to 9.02, 4.10x2.20. I'll be putting the wide ratio box back in this winter. Then it will be 4.10x2.52 which will be 10.33. Currently with my 9.02 number I can just about break loose my 11" 50's, from a roll at about 25 mph. No clutch, just punching it.

So with your 2.73's I'd be looking for a wide ratio box. 2.73x2.52 = 6.87 But you'll have no problem on the highway.

You'll need a new Carrier if you want to upgrade.
308 is the most popular ratio you'll find.
So 3.08/3.42/3.73 would most likely be your choices for the street.

Correct me if I'm wrong but, I just took a look at richmond gear site tio confirm and it says,

When replacing a stock 2.56 and numerically lower, the carrier
must be replaced with a carrier of 2.73 or higher.

Which I thought was true as well.

I think he's good to go with the gear of his choice.

I have 3.42s in my car and when i had my m20 muncie in the car i thought it was the perfect all around gear. not to much and not to little.
But now that i have a 6 speed in my car i'm looking to buy a set of 4.10 gears for it.
If your interested and not in a big rush i'll sell you my 3.42s cheap once i find a cheap set of 4.10s. GoFast

Hey guys. I have a Saginaw 4-spd out of my '80 El Camino and plan on putting it in my '77 Malibu with a 350. It was originally a Turbo 350 with a 305. I think the El Camino had a 3.08 rear but I can't remember now and the car is long gone. scratch
Is it likely that my '77 has the same rear? How do I go about finding out? I also went from 215/70's to 285/70's, how's this thing going to drive at highway speeds? I know, I know lots of questions lol.

If anyone could shed a little light on my situation I'd greatly appreciate it. Surprised
