EGR
Do our cars have egr valves? I know it was invented in the 70's, but I'm unaware if it was in common use yet, and if I should be thinking about replacing it.

Re: EGR
If your engine is original to the car- yes. They are located on the intake manifold it's the "Exhaust Gas Recirculator". There will be a vacuum line going in to it and it has a cast iron mounting plate under it & a gasket bolted as a unit to the intake w/ 2 bolts. Might be obscured by the air cleaner, although it's usually mounted towards the front on the passenger side. They're about $40-50.00. You might be able to clean it out by adding a can of "Seafoam" to your gas tank. That will also clean out your air intake cross-over chambers, which tend to get gunky over time (but that's normal).

The item circled in this pic is a heater valve. The EGR valve can't be seen in this pic, it would be underneath the air cleaner on the passenger side of the carburetor.

Re: EGR
+1 on the heater control valve.
They kinda look the same but the EGR sits on the intake manifold and has a larger tube to the carb, the heater control uses a small vacuum line.
The EGR should be left alone.
They tend to leak once removed.
No performance to be gained by changing it out.

Re: EGR
Cap it off. On both ends ,shove a Bearing in the vacuum hose if you want the effect.
