4spd Conversion Empty 4spd Conversion

Post by DiscoMalibu Thu Jul 12, 2012 12:41 am

Ok well, I've been planning to install a 4spd in the Disco Malibu but with time/money constraints I haven't bought the parts yet. I still need do the floor pans, paint the undercarriage and buy a new fuel tank.

At this point i'm just trying to plan everything out. My question is, the Parts Place, Inc. offers two conversion kits. One kit has an 8 3/4" bell crank while the other has an approximately 10" bell crank. I'd imagine the shorter one would be for a big block while the other for a small block. scratch I'm dropping a 350 into this thing. Their page does not specify what application each bell crank is used for. Does anyone here have a small block running a 4spd? Could someone measure it for me and let me know? I'd greatly appreciate it, I hate ordering parts and then finding out I have to send it back because I didn't do my home work.

Thanks and happy gear-bangin'!

Just checked mine. I have a 350. Little tight getting in there with the tape measure but look like about 9 inches. So I'd go with the 8 3/4". Good Luck

I was looking at the post again and you would think the shorter one would be for the small block. I guess the big block might sit a little higher or maybe the block tapers more to the bottom. Got me on that one. But mine is about 8 3/4".

I emailed this question to The Parts Place. They didn't know which one I would need. I was going to buy the kit with one size, and buy the other separate, then return the one I didn't need. This conversion is on my list. If I can ever find the time to get back to "Ethel". Really looking forward to watching you get this setup into yours.

I have the 77 shop manual. Will look @ it and post if mentioned. The earlier cars are Muncie correct?

Edit: 77 book covers 3 & 4 speed Saginaw 76mm & an 83mm Warner 4 speed- no mention of clutch fork size, sorry, shows diagrams though. If you want I can try & take a pic of the pages. This might be worth checking too?

I'm dying to get this thing together. I'll be grabbing this kit once the funds are availible which won't be for a while. I figured I'd try to find someone with this setup in their car in order to get an idea of what I'll need. Thanks Joe! I don't understand why they sell the parts but are not sure which kit is for what application? Neutral

I'm dropping a Saginaw 4spd in it which was out of my 1980 El Camino factory 4spd. (RIP Sad ) I have a lot of work to do before the drivetrain even meets its new home. I have a lot of time and money to spend in the meantime.
