Tired of looking at the 73 sitting
Well, it's been sitting in various places since 1993. 1973 Chevelle SS 454/Turbo 400. 454 is long gone....Don't ask ( cracked block), still upsets me! Anyway, never planned on it sitting so long. The more I look, the more rust I find. For awhile, I thought it was a lost cause. After a cancer diagnosis in 2010, I felt, If they could fix me, I'm going to at least start fixing it. Don't have tons of money to throw at it, so it will go slow. Plan on doing the work myself. It has a 70 something 350 in it right now. Think I'm going to pull engine and trans. Start rebuilding the front end and brakes. Just want to start making progress. Wish I still had the 454.....

Re: Tired of looking at the 73 sitting
If you are going to replace the front suspension and steering parts, it's much easier with the front clip removed. Rear fender bolts, and core support mounts, are pretty much what holds the front clip on.
Good luck, and hang in there !!

My old friend the bodyman once told me," The more you grind, the more you find " LOL

Be careful with sanding, the coarse marks from grinding are more work for finishing....

I was taught by a body man that works on very high end cars to use a chemical stripper on large area's so you dont get coarse marks. Take it off once it lifts with a plastic bondo spreader.

Sometimes that can be more work and cost you more money. You have to wash the area you are working on several times, might have to redo the body filler again. You don't want those chemicals to react to the new paint and have to redo it again.

What is used to neutralize the stripper? He used to wipe it with prep sol a few times but is there something else? I seem to remeber him saying that he never used water since he would never let water touch the bare metal.

Re: Tired of looking at the 73 sitting
That right Quarter panel is rusted out and will be replaced. I was just seeing if there was any bondo. Interesting discussion on paint removal. Thanks:)

Re: Tired of looking at the 73 sitting
Got the left fender stipped and primed. Picked up a 454 block and crank casting # 361959 which shows 73-75 Chevelle! It's a 2 bolt main, but should be enough for HP that I intend. Can't wait to see what machine shop says.

Fender looks good! Nice looking block too, hopefully it won't take much to get it ready.

Re: Tired of looking at the 73 sitting
Yeah, the rust really sucks. I am going to start buying the panels that are reproduced. I found a place in Arizona that has some other pieces that are not reproduced. If I didn't have the rust issues could get to the fun stuff sooner. In the long run, It's good that we are saving these cars. In the past, many were crushed. Probably take the 454 block to the machine shop next week.

Re: Tired of looking at the 73 sitting
Removed lower door panel and found a bungie cord and metal hanger holding assembly in place. This car is one surprise after another! Anyway, does anybody have all the inside door parts?? Probably need another latch too....

Progress being made slowly but surely. I am really starting to j
hate bondo. In order to buy body filler, you need to take a quick course in its proper application......Driver side quarter is good. Passenger side needs replacing.

Finally got old glass and hardware out. All new parts and glass back in. A one man job...Thanks to Mcarlo77, man, this glass looks almost new!

Re: Tired of looking at the 73 sitting
Good job! I've removed a lot of door glass, but have never tried to reinstall one. Would have thought it to be a 2-man job...one to hold and manuever the glass without scratching it while another is guiding it into the channels.

Re: Tired of looking at the 73 sitting
Well, still slowly tearing down everything. Located a donor package tray on the forum. Just now noticed the rust in core support and some on firewall. Starting to wonder if the cost of all this rust repair is worth it. On a limited budget, and still need to get patch panels for trunk, floor pans, and a right quarter....

Re: Tired of looking at the 73 sitting
Don't get discouraged- I've been working on mine for over two years and on more than one occasion I've wanted to put it up for sale.
It might be easier in your case to get a replacement core support if you have any local junk yards near you.
If not I have access to a 73 Monte, 75 Elco, 73 Lemans & 76 Malibu 4 door about 45 minutes away. I'll take a look at them next week or the week after if you want & see how they are. The core support is easy to remove...Don't know what the yard would charge me but if you're interested shoot me a PM. I'll be going there anyway to salvage some small trim items so I can take a few pics. Shipping this stuff from MA to Houston might be a few bucks though- so a local find for you would be the best budget wise. I do have a large box from a water heater that it would fit in though.
