Body bushing question.

Post by Joe73 on Mon Oct 08, 2012 4:54 pm

Guys just picked up a set of rubber body bushings for a 68-72 GTO convertible. Complete kit, WITH sleeves, for $68 to my door. Includes the rad support bushings as well. The kit is sold by yearone, part number MH5051. Sleeves are well made and are thicker steel than the factory ones.

I've been matching them up with a set of used bushings I have. I know that used bushings are "sqwished" and not of original size. But here's what I've found. I find that the new bushings are about 1/8" shorter in height and about 3/16" smaller in diameter all around. Meaning that they are about 3/8" smaller in overall diameter than the stock ones. That is matching them up sleeve to sleeve.

I was wondering about others experiences when replacing your bushings. Poly or rubber, did you find any differences in thickness or diameters?? I tried them in the frame holes and they fit perfect so I have no problem using them. I dont see any problem with them being slightly shorter because they're all like that. I matched them up side by side. Just basically wondering about the diameter.

I plan on wiping these new sleeves down with some wax and grease remover and hitting them with some either black or clear paint for some protection.

Opinions?

I could be wrong Joe but I seem to remember someone saying that a bushing kit for a 68-72 Chevelle convertible was a dead match to the 73-77 A Body Chevelle/Malibu....{Someone please correct this if I'm mistaken.}

I'm a fan of the original style body bushings. Maybe some poly for steering & suspension but not for the body to sit on. I've read complaints they don't seem to give as much (too stiff) & don't fit as good. My $0.02.

Thats what I've read as well. I see no problems with them at all. I like the way the sleeves are made too. I'm just curious as to the overall diameter being 3/8" smaller which is only 3/16" smaller around. By being a little smaller in diameter they dont seem as "beefy" as original GM ones. Funny thing too, even though yearone lists them as 68-72 GTO, four of the bushings are molded with the word chevrolet on them.

The '73-'77 A body bushings I bought came from The Parts Place, for my '75 El Camino. That was a couple of years ago...like 2010.

This is what I said and used on my Chevelle. No offense but it has been repeated over and over. The 68-72 conv body mounts work!!!

Anybody know of rubber bushing kits for the whole car, or do i have piece it together? Was planning on going all poly, but they are too stiff and squeaky for me.

Budman, so the set you used were slightly smaller in diameter?

Sublime, my yearone MH5051 kit is complete. Its a rubber kit. It has 12 bolt through bushings and 4 solid rubber bushings that go 2 above the rear axle and 2 for the center of the door area. No bolts on those.

I think more people would benefit from thinking about what they're trying to do instead of just automatically assuming all rubber ones are bad by default. They're not, and for anyone who wants to drive their car frequently on the road, drag race a lot or a little, and in general doesn't care if they've got the absolute highest ability to handle turns (at the expense of comfort no less) then rubber is the way to go. It's going to be more comfortable, quiet, and for the drag racers out there any mush will just help weight transfer to the rear.

I didn't look for poly mounts for mine. I figure that any deformity of the fit between the body & frame might be taken up somewhat by using the rubber mounts.

Not sure if '72 mounts will work OK on a '77

The Parts Place is where I bought mine for '73 to '77 A bodies.

I don't want to jack this thread but could we get a thread with pros and cons on poly vs rubber by users who have bought, installed, and used the both of them? I plan on replacing ALL the bushings on my G3 this summer and it would be nice to have something to go by along with being a good way for others doing the same.

I got a set of poly bushings off Summit for the 68-72 Chevelle convertible, and they fit fine. The directions are a little off as one set has to be installed backwards from what they say. I would suggest salvaging the sleeves off the old ones if you can, otherwise you're gonna run into the problem of trying to find new ones. (I had the fun of fabricating my own from washers and metal sleeves from Fastenal. The one person who I saw had the complete poly bushing setup was Hydroking, but unfortunately, we can't ask him where he got his setup from. (There are pics on this site of his setup.) Maybe someone who was following his project at the time might have more info as to where he got them.

Has anyone used the below bushings? Seems like they are complete and I'm not sure about using poly if my sleeves can't be reused.

The Parts Place bushings are $250 and Year One says it will take 1-4 weeks to ship and I don't want to wait that long to receive them.

I've got core support bushings from the parts place- they're excellent quality.

Other members have bought from them also but can't remember who at the moment, LOL

This is where I was looking at getting mine from. The picture they show didn't look right to me though. But I think I need the round ones. Does anyone know which car used the square ones? I found another site that listed a difference for big block or small block. I though maybe the big block used the square. Thanks.

Here are mine from OPGI. I have not installed them but they seem to be the correct ones just by comparing them to the old ones. I didn't take off the core support yet but looks like they will fit correctly.

She's a keeper! I nonchalantly leave Summit, Jegs, OPGI, etc. catalogs lying around the house with stuff highlighted in them around Xmas and my birthday. Smile

Joe, I will try but they are at my parents house. I will see if they can send me a pic with tape measure to know what the measurements are. It might be a few weeks before I can get back there to take the measurements myself.

She sure is...not only did I get the bushings but I got sport mirror lenses & a few more small items
Here is a link to them on the site...

I've never seen the square ones they refer to also on the page.

My bushings were dead on BTW.

These were the ones she ordered by mistake for a 70 Chevelle, that's what the packing list said anyway.
