want new exaust
My '76 has a single pipe on the passenger side straight back. What would be my best option using the stock manifolds and single hump crossmember? I'd love a dual exhuast but don't want headers or swap the crossmember. Would just getting rid of the catalytic converter and using a larger diameter pipe add some power and maybe economy? Could I run two pipes side by side on the passenger side then split them after the axle? Also, would like a nice sound but not too loud for muffler recommendations. Thanks.

How about keeping the same style setup you now have except use ram horn style cast iron exhaust manifolds with larger pipes with a regular style crossover pipe and then maybe use a NASCAR style exhaust behind the muffler. I don't know if it will work, but it may be worth checking out. JB

Years ago I had used your idea of running two pipes side by side down the passenger side through the single hump cross member & one piped back over to the driver side on my '77 Grand Prix with stock manifolds. It actually tucked up so nicely that you would have to be directly underneath to realize it was done without a double hump cross member. As far as muffler recommendations it sounds like a two or three chamber designed turbo style muffler maybe what your'e in search of. Which there are many options. Myself I am using a Thrust welded two chamber design. I would single out a couple of choices & find a youtube clip to compare sounds.

I used to run both pipes out the back, side by side. Kinda different of course, but it spooked a few people who wondered what was going on there !

Re: want new exaust
Why no headers? It's literally 15hp gain, plus improved power over the entire powerband..PLUS better fuel economy...just sayin'..and a set of turbo mufflers will keep it real quiet. Tucking it up, and doing it right, getting the pipes bent close may end up exceeding the cost of a good set of even used headers and a Summit exhaust system. In my experience, I've learned to do stuff the right way I'd want it in the future the first time instead of a "just for now" kinda deal. I put the Summit exhaust system in on my garage floor. Oh, and for crossmembers, you can use a 68-72, just drill a couple 7/16 holes in the frame and bolt it in, they're just bolted in on our cars anyway...

I'm trying to keep everything as stock as possible. But I might consider it. I guess these cars won't have any real value leaving them alone.

Yeah, I know what you're sayin'. Unfortunately, the forgotten years of GM anything are not very popular among collectors...or anyone but us for that matter, haha. In the end, it's probably going to be more valuable to save the stock stuff and just put on headers. Anyone who's got a real boner for originality is more likely to appreciate that more than a stock exhaust that's been chopped to peices.

Yeah I guess whatever I do I'll just keep the original parts.
