In case anyone is interested, this is the formula for figuring the rate of a spring.

11,250,000 x (wire diameter to the fourth power) divided by 8 x # of active turns x (mean diameter cubed)

Active turns are the number of turns of the spring that do not touch anything.

Mean diameter is figured by adding the inside diameter and the wire thickness together.

If I was smart enough to figure out that formula I would be rich instead of a dumb wrench !

Very Impressive!! Thank you for the spring info, I've had a lot of questions about spring rates and sway bars. I think it was CHP had an article about balancing rate and sway bar stiffness. Fat Man Fab catalog has some interesting info for spring rates for GM A bodies in their catalog. Thanks Again!

First let me say I am absolutely sure I don't know much about which spring I can install that will lower my Malibu 2" and still give me a decent ride.

I have added many new parts that have substantially reduced front end weight.  I'm now ready to update to larger wheels to improve handling and make the car look much better.

So, with all that being said could someone in the Forum give me a heads up for front and rear springs.

I went with Belltech all the way around and they seem okay. I've only driven the car less than 100 miles with them installed although they have been installed on the car for 2 or so years. I will need to install their rear shock as well since the stock shock has more travel and the spring rattles around going over bumps.

Moog has a cool chart of all their spring models and exact specs like height, installed height and spring rate. Great for comparisons.

I have to dig up some notes I took from way back when, but the first thing you need to do is to weigh your car so you exactly how much weight is supported by the front and rear tires. You then subtract the weight of the unsprung weight (wheels/tires/axle/spindles/brake components) to know how much is actually supported by the spring. You can then do the math to figure out how much the weight of your car will compress a given spring. The rear springs are easy to figure out, but the front suspension needs a third class lever formula to figure out the load height.

If you don't want to do the math, at least the information gained from weighing your car will give a tech at the spring mfr. a much better chance of getting you at the ride height and quality you are searching for.
