Looks pretty much like the LS1 I saw Wallyup installing in his '74 Laguna! You two should compare notes. Wally's done an amazing job so far getting everything lined up, hooked up and plumbed. Nice job...both of you!

Thanks. Got the fuel system sorted out thanks to G3NUT. Having the tank picked up today. No fill tube with the tank so found one at the autopartshop.com for $85. Still gotta find the rubber connector from tube to tank. Ordered the new sending unit/fuel pump. Waiting on the conversion trans extension so the mechanical speedo will work. Hopefully this weeken the engine will be in.

Anyone have an extra tach for the 2 round bezel dash?

and what kind and where did you guys get it?

This particular box has the metric o ring style connectors that the ls1 ps pump uses. I found one that I put on the firebird that uses the older style connectors. I get mine from Autozone. $130 plus $15 core.

Just found out today that my Fuel tank (from the 95 impala) that was in the car when I bought had 17 gallon of old rotten gas in it. (man does that stuff smell rotten). The sending unit is all shot and rusted up. The good thing is its a totally plastic fuel tank. Called some Tank shops and both said to put some De-greaser in it with hot water and let it sit for a few hours then, power wash it at a do it your self car wash. I have one of those car washed 2 blocks away from me. Ordered new sending unit and fuel pump today.

I like those LS 's from that cars verses the truck set up I'm running. Just hard to find a good price on them in my neck of the woods.

Car looks great.

I knowthat the LS motor makes a heck of a lot of power, but I'd have a hard time putting that ugly motor in my pretty car. I guess I'm just an old school type of guy...

Thanks for the thread! Please keep the pictures coming, I'd like to see the headers and motor mounts you use. Nothing like individual coils, six bolt mains, fuel injection, 60's era compression on todays pump gas all in a lighter package to make a guy feel good!

I like the old blocks too (1988 & back) but when you have a car that's had suspension mods, new school rims & other serious enhancements for a "pro touring or street machine" look those LS motors not only look better in the car (more modern look) but they'll make all those other mods worth while. I think G3nut has a 6 speed trans- you couldn't run his trans on an old school SBC or BBC and have it work as good as with the LS. My $0.02

BTW- you are a nice Dad for doing this. Gotta teach them young ones right. I hope mine is done by the time my 7 YO can drive. He's got dibbs on the car. Very Happy

Here is last nights work. I installed the mechanical speedo conversion tail shaft on the 4l60e.

Old shaft removed you have to get the old reluctor off the shaft. I did not have a puller long enough so I cut almost through with a die grinder and put a chisel in the slot and gave it a smack. It cracked and slid right off.

next step was to install an adaptor plate.

Then slide the new reluctor/drive gear piece on the shaft.

Next you line up the drive gear in the mechanical speedo hole in the tail shaft.

I agree that the ls will never have the eye appeal that my 428 in the firebird has

But you have to keep up with the times and you can't argue with the cheap power the ls motors make. I have 3 times the $ in the pontiac drivetran that i will in the ls swap.

Here are the dirty dingo sliders installed on the ls. 2.5 inches of adjustment. Then you just use your sbc engine side mounts. Pretty slick

Did you swap out your oil pan?

I got my mounts from them and they have tabs welded to them as I wanted to keep the A/C and said they would fit. Still had to space them with a few washers. Was a real treat to get the main bolt through. I swapped my pan from a cast one from summit and it hit cross member even with the tabs on the brackets. That's why we had to put spacers in. With mounts all the way forward so engine is back as far as plates allow it still sits forward in compartment. Tail shaft on trany just clears rear tunnel so it did work.

The brackets you have look like you can get more adjustment but you may need to space the motor mount on frame up then in order to get pan clearance.

I have the stock f body aluminum pan on the engine. It's supposed to fit but that remains to be seen. These particular mounts raise the engine 1/2 inch so that should help with the pan clearance. I would like to keep the factory ac and alternator mounts also if they will clear. I did find that my alternator bracket is cracked so I have to deal with that.

with the truck intake its sits pretty high. You will not have that issue with a car intake. I did not want to spend a ton on this so I'm going with what came on it to save some cash. In my area the car engine was over twice as much as the trucks.

I bought a set of what I was told were F body manifolds (Ebay) but they did not clear they hit the frame so I ended up going with new cast iron Hooker headers.

The car I bought had a LT1 with a 4L60e trany in it at one time. The guy I got it from sold it and set a 396 in the hole. The new drive shaft that came with the car bolted right up. Just had to move rear cross member about a inch.

Its fun making it all fit, that's the love of all of this.

I agree. Figuring it all out is what I love about this hobby too. This is my first try at the whole fuel injection thing but I am sure that once I figure it out I will never install an old school v-8 in a car again UNLESS it's a numbers matching original car. I am already thinking that my next is going to be a c4 vette rag top with an ls engine.

I agree totally, I'm keep my eyes open for a car set up not a truck one so if this goes the way I think it will. I'll be doing it to my 56 chevy with some nice upgrades. Then maybe my 73 also.

I'm more of a custom guy that a stock one. I like both but like the fun of some thing different.

Keep notes for your next one and it will go a lot easier and faster.

I like those mounts a lot more than the ones Wally and I have. I thought the F-body pan would hit the crossmember so I have 3 different pans. My H3 pan (which is GM's "swap pan") thats going in my Vega is about 1-1/4" shorter vertically than a truck pan. I may try that in my wagon since the pan sits way too low for me.

I love the look of the newer Chev motors just as much as the old, just in a different way, I fully think Chevrolet has perfected the small block design with the LS series, furd had the flathead in the 30's and 40's but with Chevy coming out with the first smallblock all others have paled in comparison. Whats not to like visually about a great fuel injection manifold and exposed cross bolt mains? And coils for every hole? Come on, thats just awesome right there! We've been dinkin around with HEI for long enough. Theres no way I'd hide those coils, I'd leave em in plain view and brag about the tremendous spark capability. Has anybody actually studied what a gen 1 coil goes through even at idle? let alone at 6000? Its amazing that a single coil can even jump the gap it can. Its just to much work for one coil.

Keep up the good work guys.

P.s. Do you think when the flathead V8 came out the diehard fourbanger guys scoffed at it? Or when the stovebolt six was replaced by the smallblock? Hot rods have ALWAYS been about putting the latest and greatest in our favourite cars. I appreciate traditional but converse all stars are uncomfortable as all heck.
