Rearend Swap ?s Empty Rearend Swap ?s

Post by driveit Fri Apr 05, 2013 3:14 pm

Thinking of different ways to get a rearend with disks. Originally thought of getting a conversion kit, but it seems I could get a rearend already setup cheaper. Problem is I'm a little closer to the broke end of the money pool than I would like to be and I don't have a clue what would swap as a direct bolt on. Any tips?

Thanks and God bless,
Chris

Try a caprice ( or impala SS) rear end. Look at the interchange ability thread for the details. Very Happy

No problem. Just look at the interchange thread under the tech section first, to see what you will need before heading out. Thumbs up

OK, if I switch to a rearend that has the larger bolt pattern would these wheels fit?

Also is this a good tie and will this it fit that wheel?

Just a question on this rear swap thing. Does the caprice rear have the shocks in front of the axle like our cars? How about the monte SS. They come with a 3.73 posi which would be a nice rear gear. Just wondering about the shock location.

The shock location on caprices (and Monte Carlos) are the same as ours. You need a 5X5 bolt pattern for the impala rear end. those wheels are measured in a millimeters and I think what you listed equals 4X4.75, which is the original bolt pattern (not the caprice). Maybe someone better at math than me can chime in.

Interesting. I think if I had to locate a rear, I'd look for the monte SS rear. That way I'd keep the 4 3/4 bolt pattern and have a 3.73 posi. Thanks for the info.

I think its to narrow to use without redoing all the mounting points. I am pretty sure that Monte SS's (and turbo Buicks) have 8.5 rear ends, so at minimum the posi carrier could be retro fitted. I'm not 100% sure about this though.

Sounds like it may be easier to just go with a conversion kit and pay the extra. We shall see. Thanks again.

I agree...just a matter of saving enough for it. Darn things are expensive but at least it'll be a guaranteed fit.
