boxed control arms
Has anybody ever used PMT fabrication control arms? I just bought a set for $279.99 with free shipping from eBay. Boxed lowers and tubular uppers. I've never seen a set of 4 for so cheap. They also have energy suspension greasable bushings.

Re: boxed control arms
Have been thinking about the same set also. That's a good deal. I think a few members have bought them or similar (maybe Hotchkis?). Post some pics- I'd like to see them up close.

These? You just saved $20.00 too (they're 299.99 on their reg web site).

I was looking at this set too but think I only need them to be like the set you bought.

Re: boxed control arms
I passed on the adjustable ones since i would be clueless as to where to set them. Also my setup is really not that wild, just looking to stop wheel hop.

Re: boxed control arms
If they send you whats in that picture I hope you're not using a factory style sway bar. I really like the lowers I got from Spohn. They have poly bushings and had welded in tubes for the rear sway bar where the holes were instead of leaving it open.

Is there no provisions for a rear bar?

Re: boxed control arms
No holes in the factory arms. Also when i was younger i welded flat sheet metal to the bottom of them to "box" them. Probably not very effective .

I have the PMT tubular lowers and adjustable upper. There are different models available -- ones with a provision for rear sway (which I have) and ones that don't. The ones that will take the rear sway bar have the appropriate holes drilled through with tubing welded through for reinforcement. The only issue I had was I had to actually mount them upside down, as (IIRC) the grease fitting on the axle end was completely obscured by the mount.
They work great, but they need to be greased regularly to avoid squeaking.

Re: boxed control arms
Thanks for the response. The ones i ordered have holes for a bar but it looks like it might need to be a aftermarket bar. If i remember correctly factory bars mount from underneath and these look like they mount to the inside sides. I'll have to wait till they arrive to be sure.

Re: boxed control arms
Mine used the factory bar with no trouble in the stock location -- everything lined up perfectly.

Re: boxed control arms
If that's the case I'll be off to the junkyard in search of a caprice rear bar.

Re: boxed control arms
All that stuff bolted in there, specially with the stab bar, should make a good difference in handling.

Re: boxed control arms
I hope so. I hope it fixes the wheel hop also.

Re: boxed control arms
I've had wheel hop several times since I bought my car in 82. When I bought it I removed the rear sway bar. Not interested in handling at that time. When I would get wheel hop I knew it was time for new shocks. Quick shock change and the wheel hop is gone.
I've run several types of arms over the years. I had my stock arms (with the "U") for the sway bar still in, no sway bar. Stock arms with aluminum bushings. Square tubular arms with tube inserts instead of bushings. And stock arms with poly bushings. I've had wheel hop with all of them from time to time. Just get good shocks.
I've also used to run with spacers between the front frame sway bar mounts. Usually run about a 3/4" to 1" spacer. Basically spacing the U shaped mount away from the frame. Makes for real sloppy handling but real nice for weight transfer. Worked good for me. When I did the spacer trick I would run a standard chevelle front bar. My original 1 1/8" bar when into storage. Thank god I kept it. Its going back in with my new frame swap.

Re: boxed control arms
I think part of my problem is the over size coils (spec'd for a'74 olds 98)

Re: boxed control arms
Mine are oversized as well. I was under the car yesterday and removed the lower shock bolts. My shocks only extend 2 inches more. Definitely going to get some shorter springs. My current ones would be good for an el camino or wagon.
I running Competition Engineering adjustable Drag Shocks. 3 position adjustable.

Re: boxed control arms
ok, so I finally got my new suspension on.

the rear is about 2 inches lower than before.
heres what I installed...
[img][/img]
the bar is '95 impala SS, eBay score $40.00. the springs are stock replacement I got from amazon $50.00. and the control arm set was also from eBay.
by comparison here's what it used to sit like..

Re: boxed control arms
Does pinion angle have a relevant part in wheel hop? Do adjustable control arms help prevent wheel hop and create a better launch for drag racing, when the pinion is placed correctly??

Re: boxed control arms
Pinion angles are important for drivetrain vibrations, I don't know if they will cause or prevent wheel hop, i wouldn't think so since a u-joint should be able to compensate, but I don't know for sure. I was more interested in replacing the flimsy arms and hopefully curing some wheel hop. They helped but it still wheel hops
