leaking transmission Empty leaking transmission

Post by magic marouke Tue Jul 30, 2013 9:18 am

i have a big auto transmission leak . i couldnt get to the car for a week but when i did there was a huge puddle of oil . now it looks like it may be coming from the speedometer cable fitting . even with the small tab tight that keeps the gear in place the gear is still a little loose if moved with pliers or by hand . i didnt take the gear out yet but was wondering if so much oil can come out of there ???? im assuming the o ring is bad so will replace it . any ideas guys ? thanks

There should be a gasket there and yes- there are several locations on these trans' that can leak a good amt of fluid.

When you say gasket do you mean an O ring halfway down the gear piece you pull out the side of the transmission ? I took one out of a scrap tranny and it looks the same as mine

Yes....small O ring.  Check your dip stick too, that's another bad spot for leaks.

yes i checked the dip stick and its all dry there . also round the pan and took the torque converter cover off which looks ok . i just didnt think that much oil could come out of the speedometer cable so quickly . im hoping it is that and nothing more serious . thanks 77mali

Shouldn't be hard just take note of how that pin holds it down, it should go right back & mesh with the other gear that's inside.  I took a pic of mine it's a TH350.  This is what it looks like inside.  There is alot of fluid that will accumulate in the tail housing.  Might want to also check the seal on the end of that housing too where the drive-shaft goes in.  I replaced mine as a precaution since it was all out but if it's ok & you don't want to mess w/ a complete fluid change leave it be.

What's really fun is when it works its way up the cable and starts leaking out the back of your speedo. Ask me how I know.Rolling Eyes

thanks thats helpfull knowing it should go straight in . will have to manouvre my hand around the cross member a bit . i guess i could turn the plastic gear from the outside (where the square ended cable attaches) untill it slots in to place ?
duh ! didnt think to look at the driveshaft end but i will .

cheers

Yup. That's exactly what I mean. The fluid pressure will force it up through the cable if it has nowhere else to go. Your first indicator will be transmission fluid on your shoes.

Yes. By the time you know it's happening, it's already hideous back there.

ok i took out the fitting that has the plastic gear in it . lost more oil as the car was jacked up at the front . put in an identical fitting and gear from another transmission , tighten it down and it looks like (so far) that the leaking has stopped . will know for sure tonight or wednesday . one thing i did forget to check was that the gear was the same . i compared them together by looking at them but thats about it . my speedometer was way off before any way and jumped around a lot , any one know why ?

loose cable maybe. I just put my cable on. Never had one since I owned the car. Works good so far. I've got a leak too and have yet to try and tackle it.

The cable was loose when I first took it off . On there tight now so will see in a few days when I get to drive it . Everyone of my vehicles had a leak of some kind now , bleh !

If I'm not mistaken GM color coded the speedo gears, so if the colors are the same than its the same tooth count. Also, check the cable as it goes to the back of the speedo, as it is a slip fit and can back away from speedo. You should probably lube the inside of the cable to!
