rear sway bar diameters

Post by Joe73 on Thu Aug 15, 2013 8:36 pm

Quick question, since I've never run into this before.
Rear sway bars.  I have 2 of them.  One measures 7/8" diameter and the other measures 15/16" diameter.  In the pic below the 7/8" bar has been blasted with crushed glass and its real clean.  The 15/16" bar is all original with surface rust.  The area I put the wrench on has been sanded with 80 grit paper by hand.  Came out nice and smooth and would be great for a repaint.  No unusual pitting or scaling on the bar which could "increase" its diameter if the flaking was bad enough.

Anyone ever see a 15/16" rear bar?  Problem I'm running into is that I dont remember which bar was my factory bar on my SS.  I removed my rear bar back in the mid 80's when I used to street race it.  Dont know where I acquired this second bar.

Not totally sure but the 15/16" is most likely an F body bar.  I'm pretty sure the 7/8 is the standard 74-77 unit, not sure about all 73's ...seems a lot of things are different on 73's. I did get a 7/8" one of of a 73 Monte though.

I will crawl under my SS in the morning and see what I have. Mine's a 73 SS350 auto, and I have no clue which bar would be there, so I want to look now anyway!

My stock for both my 1976 Cutlass and the 1977 SE were 7/8" but like mentioned the SS could have the thicker 15/16" for 1973

Please do, I'm curious.  Mine is a factory 350, 4 speed, SS with 3.42 rear.  So we should be the same.

Pretty unusual but who knows what they did in 73. Maybe a first run for '73 since my car was built the 1st week of January 1973. Then they went 7/8"?

I just looked at mine. It looks to be a 7/8 inch bar. It is the original one for sure, no changes have been made to the suspension but shocks.

Just looked at the 75 Grand Am and it is the same on the rear, a 7/8 inch one. However on the front, the SS has a 15/16th inch bar, while the Grand Am has a massive 1-3/16th inch one. I can't check my Laguna today, it is at the A/C shop.

Thanks Pontichev for checking. I was thinking my factory bar was 7/8", have no idea where I got the 15/16" one from. Looks like the 15/16" bar is an oddball. I think I'll be putting the 7/8" back in since its already been blasted.

My front factory bar is 1 1/8", thats what came with the car in '82.  Glad I kept it all these years.  I switched it to a smaller diameter 7/8" bar back in the early 80's when I got the car.  Then I spaced the sway bar frame mounts away from the frame to get a little better weight transfer.  Handled like crap but launched nicely.  But I"m putting the stock stuff back in.

Factory was 7/8". It would not be a rear F body one, they are totally different. I got a 1" rear bar from a Caprice. Impala SS and 9C1 police Caprices used larger bars if you wanted a bigger one. Never seen a 15/16, might have come from an El Camino. My front bar was from a 1976 El Camino SS and it is 1 1/4".

My 75 Laguna has a rear bar that is 15/16 and my 75 El Camino has a 7/8 bar. Both are original to the car which was verified by the original owners.
