Air shocks , yay or nay ?

Post by magic marouke on Fri Sep 06, 2013 11:41 am

My car sits the factory height but when there's weight in the trunk it can sit pretty low and the bottom scrapes when driving in and out of deep driveways . Would air shocks in the rear help out any ? Thanks

I would look into load leveler shocks, the kind with the little spring around the shock. Air shocks will work for your need, but will be a little more high maintenance. You could also upgrade to cargo coils, or station wagon springs.

Even though your car sits a quite normal height, the springs may be weak with a heavier load on them. My Malibu was that way, and I replaced the springs with the stock type & it worked fine.

I would also try the spring swap & perhaps consider heavy duty rated stock style replacement shocks. If anyone put heat on those suckers in the past, for whatever reason, they'd loose their ductility.

I just (8 months ago) new Moog springs from amazon. I paid like $60.00 and they qualified for free shipping. Only thing is you have to research your own part #.

I just put load leveler springs on and while I was in there also put in a 2" poly spacer great ride and makes it sit better also. Got springs at Rock Auto and spacers on eBay. The spacers were for a blazer but worked great.

Thanks for all the replays . I'm getting the car checked out at Firestone next week for brakes , steering , shocks etc . I'll look in to making some improvements when I get the diagnosis back .

I've always had air shocks on my El Caminos, but never on a car. They serve their purpose on an El Camino, but the air bags inside the rear springs seem to work OK on cars....

I have a set of the air bags that go inside the springs. Worked great but don't provide any lift! They prevent sagging but make the ride a little stiffer. Decided to go in another direction and don't use them any more. (hint hint) They are available!

Guys who are into drag racing have been using 1 bag in the right rear. I haven't done that, but it's claimed that it gets the rear wheels hooked up better (?))
Maybe someone here knows more about that.......

Had the car checked out and the guy said there were four newish shocks all round and in good working condition . I dunno , I might leave them on for now and see what it's like driving around . Thanks for the input guys

Buy a set of springs for a 96 Impala ss. Will give you a little more height (not too much) and it wont bottom out

I did this. On any chevelle, 64-81 they try to roll the rear end housing around the pinion when you leave the starting line. When you see any Chevelle leave the starting line with the famous twist, where it puts the driver side front tire way up and the passenger tire doesn't move, this is where the air bag works. The car is trying to pick the passenger side rear tire off the ground and plant the driver side rear. So you put an airbag in the passenger rear to resist this rotation. You can also get like Moroso trick springs for the rear where the passenger spring is of a higher rate to resist this compression of the spring.
