it was standard on 74 montes as a push starter switch.I think with the key on you should be able to push the buuton and bump the starter (like when your trying to find top dead center)

bumping the starter with the key on is a bad idea.. if the car starts, you might have a bad day. better to bump it with the key off..
i don't know what that thing does, but i know mine doesn't work to bump the starter- i've tried pushing it to see what happens, and nothing happens.

another thought could this be it ???? being so close to the brake booster ???
Dist valve / brake warning light.This valve seprates the front brake system from the rear brake system. if you lose pressure in the brake system the switch will trip and the light will go on in the dash. (brake warning light )

follow that fusible link coming out of it where sit go to ?? almost looks aftermarket to me.... my car doesnt have one of course mine is absolute baseline 76

ok all i have found that looks anything close to that is for the horn relay but no lil knob on front .........

i think that's what it's for. GM was doing some weird stuff in the mid 70's..

MAYBE
to give POWER to the switch/button........................
I have had 3 -74 montes and never once did I ever push that damn button.
