No, but I had both a 54 Chevy and a 50 Ford coupe with older Caddy V8s. That was a looong time ago. JB

Didn't those Cadillac 500's have over 400 horsepower?

425 sticks in my mind somehow...

From 1974 to 1976 the cadillac 500 cid engine had a 8.5:1 compression piston.
In 1974 the 472 had the 120-cc heads that ended in 493. This is the only year the 472 had a true flat top piston!
AND in 1974 the 500ci cadi was only rated @210 actual HP @3600 rpm and @380 foot pounds of torque @ 2000 rpm
the best 500 cadi motor to get is =====>>1970 500ci and its is 400hp @ 4400 rpm and 550 foot pounds of torque @3000 rpm if that info helps .....as you tell i was thinking about the same thing ...
way to weight for the less hp gains over a smaller BBC

Very Happy Nope, but I shoehorned one into a '65 Chevy II station wagon many moons ago. Grafted in the front 3/4 of a '78 Malibu frame and cut out the original Chevy II spring towers for side clearance. The Caddy is a good strong running engine. It is lighter than a big block Chevy in stock trim and bolts up to trannys having the Buick/Olds/Pontiac bolt pattern. It will be a tight fit widthwise, but you can do it. From memory, the big Caddy is 28" wide measured at the stock exhaust manifolds (outside to outside).

The RWD 472 engines have front sump pans. The FWD 500 El Dorado engines have a rear sump pan. You can swap pans and oil pump pickups between these engines if need be. I had to use a set of early '70s RWD exhaust manifolds on the 500 Eldorado engine in the Malibu chassis. These have 2-1/2" outlets and you can fit a nice set of 2-1/2" duals in the car.

Back then, there were no aftermarket performance parts for these engines, so I had to have the OEM cam reground and parkerized by Isky and do some welding and machining to adapt a big block Furd intake manifold. But now of days, you can get what you need to soup these engines up a bit.

The main thing to remember is that these are stump pullers and not designed to rev to the moon like a little Chevy engine. So build it to take maximum advantage of low and midrange torque production and gear it accordingly. The 500 Caddy won't even breathe heavy pushing around a 3rd gen. A-body with a highway gear. You'll love it!

Happy Motoring,

Harry

cadillac made the XLR the corvette equivalent however it ran a typical caddy northstar V8 RWD so you can get them in RWD also the newer caddy with power was the CTS-V four door but had LS6 with a 6-speed manual

A new RWD V8 STS has a Northstar as well. Some of those have V6's so
ask accordingly.

for headers, you can usually start out with big block Chevy headers for the chassis you are putting the 500 into, and weld on the 500 flanges.
a few years ago, i almost bought a complete and running 50,000 mile 472 out of an El Dorado to put in my Monte- for the $200 he was asking, i wish i would have done it.
