Post by magic marouke Tue Aug 27, 2013 10:37 pm

So I went to install the weatherstrip on my 77 and I think it maybe wrong .
Does anyone have a pic of the end of a correct one and possibly a close up of which way round it goes on the trunk ?
Thanks

Don't have a cross section of the w/strip, but maybe this will show how it's supposed to be installed. This is a factory installed w/strip, btw.

The factory w/strip is very soft. Could it be that your repro stuff is too firm? Also, the profile might not be exactly the same as some suppliers go with a generic style that will fit many vehicles to save on tooling costs.

I was given it when I got some other parts for the car at a salvage yard . It was already in a 76 so I assumed it went with the car . Maybe not though . Would have liked to see a factory one to compare before I order one online

Darn...was out today picking over a '77 Monte and could have cut a section out of the trunk w/strip. Can you post a pic of what you've got? Is there a manufacturer's name and part number on the bag?

Nothing on the bag . Did try one more time last night to get the trunk to shut with normal force . It seems ok-ish and this morning it's easier to shut the trunk . Haven't glued it down yet until I'm 100% happy with it .

Don't suppose that Monte Carlo you were picking over had a good pair of opera window trims and corners ??????? Nah didn't think so

Think you'll find it will get easier to close the trunk after the w/stripping takes a little "compression set" from the trunk lid being closed on it.

As for opera window trims...you'll never find used plastic ones that are any good. Once in awhile a set of used stainless ones will show up on e-Bay...but, if you want to go with the plastic repro ones, I either have, or can get you the corners.

Thought it would be beneficial to share my experience with installing a new trunk w/strip on the Laguna this past week. After researching reviews from other installers using the various brands online, I went with highly recommended Metro Moulded's TK46/E16. It supposedly is second best in terms of profile and density (ability to compress and conform) to the originally installed GM w/strips. I removed the Trim-Lok type w/strip previous owner installed (check out the one shown on the left...it clipped over the channel lip on the trunk opening and the bulb portion that seals actually sat lower than the spring clip section. No wonder the trunk leaked like a sieve when I first got it).

Anyway, installed the Metro w/strip and, not surprisingly, found the trunk lid to be difficult to close. However, after several days with the car sitting out in the sun with the trunk closed, the w/strip has conformed and the lid closes with normal force. Good news is that we just had a heavy downpour and no leakage. Even better news is that I found it on Amazon for around $12 w/free shipping using my daughter's Premier Acct. (free 2-day shipping on everything).

Now, to tackle the roof rail w/strips.

Metro's has done the job for me, too, though many years later the trunk is still needs a good bit of force to close it.

Why don't you bring the striker up a little... Probably lower than it should be after all the years of closing the trunk lid.

Huh! Never occurred to me it was adjustable. Embarassed

Just assumed the weatherstrip was denser than OEM and I had to live with it.

While on the subject of weatherstrips, I needed to replace the gaskets around my tail light housings. I found a guy in FL who slit some 1/2" thk x 1/2" wide SCE-41 closed-cell neoprene sponge for me to make new ones. This is the mat'l. most closely matching the factory original...and, is very hard to find anyone who will sell in small quantities. Of course, the originals were either die-cut or molded as one piece. I'm just going to run a strip around the perimeter and glue the ends. Guy goes by adrian22305 on e-Bay and he was very accommodating when I asked if he could slit 1/2" wide. I told him I'd spread the word of his various mat'ls. and capabilities.

Mine also and I lifted the latch up a bit so trunk lid sits a bit high but does nor leak so I'm OK with that.
