Hellwig Sway Bars - Got some work done

Post by BK-75 on Fri Jul 25, 2014 12:40 am

Been away from the forum for a few months, lurking when possible as I've been busy (making my wife happy) with remodeling our kitchen.

Needed some workspace and the poor car got booted to the driveway. So while it was just going to sit there anyway why not make it my daily driver and enjoy..

While driving to work I remembered I had big plans to make this thing handle and do some updates this summer. So.. pulled the trigger on some larger sway bars.

Went with Hellwig  1-5/16 hollow front bar and solid Rear bar measuring in at 1-1/8.  Great upgrade yielding big results in handling dept. The car actually feels lighter and more confident in the corners!

Took a few pictures of the front bar comparison

Looking good.  You are right about sway bars making a big improvement (esp if you were going from a 7/8's front & no rear bar setup).

Thats a monster bar. Nice that you matched it up to a bigger rear bar. Clean car BTW.

Where did you purchase the rear bar from? The least expensive rear bar we have found is from SDTrucking at $185.00. Is there a noticeable difference between the 1" and 1&1/8" rear bar?
I ask because we are looking to purchase a rear bar soon, but need to stay within our budget.

All other things being equal and diameter being the only variable the 1 1/8" bar is about 40% stiffer. If you're looking for less expensive, the Impala SS from 94 - 96 shared the same axle, has a 1" bar that bolts right up. If you've got the right control arms. Inserts and drilling them is also an option, still in the middle of this myself but I've got measurements and all you need to know if you need it.

40% is significant. Definitely worth the extra moolah. Thanks for the info dinomyte.

Nice upgrade. I may have to look into that front sway bar, I need a bigger one up there.

I bought a 95 Impala sway bar and new lower control arms/brackets. I haven't installed them yet but hope to soon.

I bought mine thru Summit racing- Hellwig model 5803 for a little more, but SDTrucking has the Rear Impala SS bar 1-18 for $153.95 with free shipping (Hellwig Model: 5820).

They have different model numbers, but should be interchangable and fit the same, but I was not 100% and played it safe and went with the other.

Either way, well worth it and loving the extra time in the car!
