265 /70 15's on 15x8's?
Fitment question: Could I fit a set of 265/70r15's on 15x8 wheels with 4" backspacing on a 1975 Monte Carlo with stock suspension? I'd be doing the same size on all 4 corners.
Any clearance issues, particularly on the front?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Are those regular passenger car tires? Or some sort of suv tire? I think they would be pretty tall.

That is definitely a strange size, I think you are right ant about being some kind of truck tire. They will probably not clear at stock height, especially if the springs have sagged. The 15/8 wheels will be fine, but I'm not sure that "tall" of a tire will clear the body when turning.

At one point I had bfg 285/70/15's on the back of my Chevy, it had olds '98 springs to raise it enough to clear. Why do you want to run such a tall tire?

X2, I test fit 275/60s on the front of my 73 and they fit fine, but I cant see any way a 265/70 will fit in there and not rub. The 265s are about the same width as the 275s, but 1.5" taller (28" vs 29.5") they should be fine on the rear, though youll probably need more than 4" of backspacing on the wheels to keep them from rubbing the fender lips.

Re: 265 /70 15's on 15x8's?
Hi, guys and thanks for your answers!
I'm looking at sizes for a second set of off road wheels and tires. This would be for sort of a Mad Max rat rod look, which fits my car's style. However, there seem to be limited sizes with aggressive tread for 15" wheels, and they're all a 70+ profile. I currently have 255/60 15's on 8" wide wheels for everyday use.
If i'm able to fit the 265's out back, I may try to fit a different size on the front. Can a 14" rim accomodate the stock brakes?

Thanks for everybody's replies. I've done some more research and figured out I can make these fit with no problems. 265/70's (pictured) on the back, 225/70's on the front. Same 15x8's I asked about.

Re: 265 /70 15's on 15x8's?
I've had a 33x12.5 mud all terrain tires on the back, they fit without any issues, and have run as tall as a 75 series tire on the front without rubbing. Those are definitely going to give you a Mad Max look!

Nice! What size wheel were you able to run the 33x12.5 on?

Re: 265 /70 15's on 15x8's?
Got the 2 rear 265/70's mounted on a set of Cragar Soft 8 steelies and threw them on today! They're huge but they fit okay. I'm very pleased with the look. Please excuse the filthy condition of the car!
I've got the 225/70's on order for the front, I'll get some better pics with all 4 on the car when it warms up a bit

Re: 265 /70 15's on 15x8's?
No rubbing that I noticed. I bottomed out the suspension by pushing up and down on the decklid. It comes a bit close but so far so good. I'll put in a pair of 1.5" coil spacers to eliminate some sag so that will give plenty of clearance

Re: 265 /70 15's on 15x8's?
This past weekend I put the two front tires on and took the car out for a test drive to the car wash. The passenger rear did rub the sidewall very slightly on hard bumps. I yanked the wheel and rolled the top of the fender lip up about half an inch which fixed the problem.
Here are a couple pics, all clean with the new shoes on. I'm really happy with the look!

Hey ramfett, did you know there is a pic of your car on the "ratty muscle cars" page on f/b?

Re: 265 /70 15's on 15x8's?
Yes I did! I was really flattered they chose mine. I put it in a comment when they asked "Any Monte Carlo owners?" and a couple days later they featured it. Pretty awesome.

Mine was picked for '70's street machines, and I had nothing to do with it. It was just was there in my feed. One guy even said he used a picture of my car as screen saver wallpaper....made me proud.
