Fuel in the engine oil. Empty Fuel in the engine oil.

Welcome, recently my electric fuel pump went out on my 73 el Camino. Because this is second time this happened I decided to install mechanical fuel pump instead. Well, not long after car started smoking a little bit, than rocker arms knocking and motor started knocking. As soon as I heard that, it was parked and not driven. I checked the motor fuel level and it was way above add line.I drained the oil and smelled the gasoline in it. I assume its the fuel pump issue thats why gas is getting into the oil.but also when I got fuel pump off the block I didn't see or smelled gas coming out the block where pump is along with the push rad for it.
any suggestions as far as what else it can be?
so far I drained the oil and removed fuel pump.
I'm hopping that motor will be still good and dont have to rebuild it.
I already purchased new mechanical fuel pump but is electric better choice? If yes, what brand?
Thanks for the help.

I would not use an electric pump on a street car, not without the proper safety backups. Such as inertia switches or oil pressure switches that would shut the pump off in the case of an accident. With that being said, a mechanical pump is more than sufficient to supply plenty of horsepower. Holley makes a good pump in both 80 and 110 gph that don't require a regulator. It is possible that the fuel pump that you used did have a bad diaphragm that could have leaked into the crankcase under pressure, but don't rule out a flooding carburetor either. So to be safe, change the oil and filter and the pump, and then pay close attention to how the carb is working.

the carb was running fine as far as I can tell. No problem with idle or accelleration. And it wasn't different The day motor start knocking. I guess because of that it would be a good assumption that carb is fine. I will get the fuel pump replaced this weekend and will post an update. Thx for info

Ok, installed new fuel pump, put new oil and knocking stopped. Rocker arms still clicking but I guess once I drive for little bit it might stop too. I will watch the oil level for a while to make sure don't have carb issues
