WTB: 73 SS manual trans B/U light switch

Post by clanceman427 on Wed Aug 26, 2015 11:58 pm

Tonight I was troubleshooting my non-existent back up lights, and I've determined that the switch is bad. I checked for continuity between the green wire at the back up light switch connector on top of the steering column and one of the back up light sockets, and I had continuity. Then I checked for continuity between the 2 male terminals on the back up light switch itself and there was no continuity. Confirmed the shifter was in reverse for this.

I looked on Ebay but only found automatic switches. Oh incidently in the process of removing the plug, the terminals inside the plug broke apart due to age/corrosion. I need to replace the terminals that make up that plug at some point.

I dont know where one is available. Can you post up pics of what the switch looks like with the plug ? I've had mine on a manual switch since I got the car. Back in the 80's it was cool to run around with your reverse lights on. LOL.

Ah yes I did that too with my first car, hehe. Around here they were called "race lights". If they were on it signified you were looking to challenge somebody.

I'll pull the switch tonight and take some pics. I called NAPA but they only list an automatic b/u switch

Here you go Joe. I took my meter to the switch and checked for continuity as I swept the contactor thru it's range but no continuity. Here are pictures of it installed and out of the car.

Oh, Im sorry. I was thinking about the reverse switch on the shifter itself. You have the reverse lockout hooked up so it rotates the column for the lights. RockAuto should have that switch for you

Rock Auto doesn't have it, but they do have the neutral safety start switch that I need, so thanks for the Rock Auto tip. Also, for the B/U switch, I found this on Ebay and it sure looks like mine:

Huh.  I must have missed that memo.  I just thought there were a surprisingly large number of electrical issues with those cars.  scratch

Just passed a nice 71 or 72 Chevelle ss on the way home and guess what? Had his race lights on! Funny since we've recently been talking about it here. I haven't seen that in probably decades now!

Yeah that's it, thanks Joe. Although I already ordered the one on the ebay link I posted, so if that one turns out wrong I can go with this place.

I installed this replacement switch today, and it is a perfect match. Just FYI incase anyone needs one, the one in the ebay link that I posted is a correct replacement. I bet Joe's link is good as well.
