'73 El Camino SS Being Parted

Post by Mcarlo77 on Sat Oct 17, 2015 9:55 pm

One of the yards I often frequent had me come over to look at a '73 El Camino SS w/454 that they just got in and are parting out (body is pretty rough, but black interior was nice). Motor is unmolested, but seized. They are trying to free it up. Very good Upper SS door panels and Lowers. SS horn pad. Interior plastic. Was one of those cars with Swivel Buckets, but column shift. Passenger side Swivel seat is nearly rusted off the swivel plate. Driver side seems to be good. Had a tach dash...so, I grabbed that. Want to check it over before offering it up for sale as I really have no need for it. Front blacked out grill had a piece broken out of it. No wheels. Let me know!

Some pcs from this Elkie.  ALL in excellent shape. Upper Headliner Windshield trim and "A" pillar trims w/short extension pcs are same as on all '73 "A" body coupes.  Upper Headliner Windshield trim is also correct for '74-'77 "A" body coupes.  Underdash lower vent ducts is same as on all '73-'77 Chevelles, Malibus, Lagunas & Monte Carlo.  Let me know if interested in anything.  If you belong and/or know of anybody on the Elcamino forum who might be interested, please share with them.  I know those Upper Rear Corner trim panels are hard to come by with undamaged "cuffs" at the bottom.

You're talking the bezel, right? Don't have one...but, the entire header panel with headlights/bezels are laying in the truck bed. Looked to be good. I can get them next trip out (too bad...was just out there yesterday).

I'm sure there is a good inner fender on the Elkie up here. Or, if not, could find one easily enough off another car. However, be advised the odd shape of these will have a pronounced effect on the cost to ship. Best to find one as close to home as possible. Not sure where you're located?

1973 SS El Camino being parted

Post by Battery man on Fri Nov 20, 2015 12:06 pm

I want the plastic 1973 inner fender.
UPS can ship anything as long as the Length x Width X Heigth = less than 160 inches and the weight is under 150 lb.
Thanks for all the replies.

Here's a tip...FedEx Ground is ALWAYS cheaper than UPS on shipments by approx. 10%.  I have an account with both of them...but, almost never use UPS for this reason.  Plus, over the years, I've heard many stories (some from people who work there) about how they mishandle packages.

Anyway, I just wanted to make sure you were aware that large boxes are expensive to ship...even when the weight is relatively light (they use "dimensional weight" for cost calculations in these situations).  In this example, I went out and took some rough measurements off my Laguna and came up with needing a box approx. 52"x24"x20".  FedEx Ground shows $182...UPS at $200.  And, this doesn't include my cost of supplies to fabricate a suitable box and packing mat'ls.  I've learned that a couple inches one way or the other on any or all of these dimensions can make a significant difference in cost, so it's hard to know exactly until it's actually boxed up.  If you have yours off the car, maybe you can get a more exact measurement and we can refigure.  But, remember to add an inch or two to each dimension you come up with for added insurance to allow for packing mat'ls, thickness of box and non-precision cutting to size of box. I did read where rates will increase 4.9% beginning first of the year for FedEx.  I'm guessing UPS will be similar.

Now...before someone jumps in with the suggestion of putting it on a Greyhound bus at a much cheaper rate, I've already had that experience once before with another Buyer and I won't do it again.  It's a p.i.t.a. for me and was a p.i.t.a. for the Buyer doing the pickup at his end.

If all this doesn't deter you, I would be more than happy to run out and verify that the inner fender is good.

x2 on that. Much better results & pricing from FedEx.

UPS vs FedEx

Post by Battery man on Sat Nov 21, 2015 9:41 am

I have used UPS for over 40 years and have a large commercial account and can ship under my UPS number. I have found they pay insurance claims better than FEDEX. A plastic fender may not need to be boxed. It could be wrapped in LOTS of Bubble Wrap, to cut down on size of shipping. It will be a while before I can remove my inner fender and take measurements. Thanks for your input I'm still interested in purchasing the fender if it is a good one
