That sucks about your 454. What are the plans for the 396?

A few years back, car craft mag did a 396 build. Good info. You can google it to find the article.

Did you get a crank with it? back in 2005 I built a 408 with 781 casting heads and a solid flat tappet cam that made 501 hp on 93 octane gas.

Thats impressive for a 396. Did you use a factory GM solid grind? I'm running 781's with 2.19/1.88 valves. Good heads.

When I built the 408, I used speed pro 2287 closed chamber pistons which required opening the chamber walls to clear the dome. This got me a 10.5-1 compression ratio. I also used a Lunati 40209 cam( the number has since changed) but it was .574/.588 lift, 249/258 @.050 and it made peak power at 6500 rpm. It had a 2 bolt block, cast crank and 7/16" rods. On top it had a performer rpm air gap and an 800 holley. In todays time, you could make the same power with a smaller hydraulic roller and have better drivability.

Why the closed chamber pistons? Do all 396 use a closed chamber head?

Chevy never built an open chamber 396. So if you wanted to buy a shelf stock piston they were closed chamber. So a closed chamber piston has more vertical sides on the piston dome than an open chamber piston. This required laying back the chamber sides of the head to clear. So what I did was use a 8180pt2 4.37 bore gasket and scribed it on the head. Then, opened the chamber sides until it cleared the dome with NO gasket on it. You want to have .040 piston to head clearance so if the motor can rotate with no gasket, then with a .039" gasket you know its fine. This was the piston I used.

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/trw-l2287f30

With a large open chamber head on a small bore motor it can take a decent dome to make compression. My heads CC'd at 118 if I remember.

Thanks for the write-up. Is this why the 396 grew to a 402? slightly larger bore better suited to a open chamber head?

The open chamber heads were developed to clean up the smog, but they flow much better than the closed chamber. The valves aren't shrouded by the chamber in a open chamber design. That's why the 781's and 049's are so popular. Most of the aftermarket oval port BB heads are styled after these 2 castings.

From what I heard, there were 2 potentials for the 402.  Manufacturing error that required .030 bore, and an emissions credit for engines over 400.  Are these true, not sure.

And yes, open chamber heads flow better and the aftermarket heads are based on those castings with a few modifications. I would rather lose a half a point in compression to gain better airflow. There is more power there.  I am actually looking at the Brodix 270 oval Race Rites for my 468 in my 70 SS chevelle.

Well have cam lifter kit on way ...... found a hella deal on ebay .... Edelbrock 2162 is the cam and comes with cam, lifters, pushrods, and new rockers stock ones.

Motor is a 396 c.i.  will be 781 heads with springs good to 550 lift, performer 2.0 intake and quickfuel 750 jetted down to 725 so with this I think it will be golden. Crank has been .010 .010 already so just need to gey cam bearings and crank bearings gasket kit amd start building

Sounds good. I'd definitely check pushrod length and rocker geometry at the valve before buttoning it up.

Unless the block and heads are severely milled, it will most likely need a 9.25/8.28 pushrod setup. The heads should most likely have 3/8" guide plates.

Should work fine with a stock converter and the small engine.

Do you know if they kept the stock exhaust rotators or were those eliminated? Also make sure you heads have the guide plates for the 3/8" pushrods.
