some distributor mods

One of the guys on the Cadillac engine forum sold me a different module for the HEI in my Caddy engine powered El Camino. This module has 5 pins instead 4. The 5th pin can be used to retard the initial timing 10 degrees for starting, buy grounding it. Running 18 degrees initial timing, with limiting full advance, makes for quite a bit more power, over the stock timing. I had it up there for a while, but it makes the started work harder. I swapped the stock type starter for a Power Master HD type, but also don't want to do damage to it with high initial timing.
I have a relay wired for retard through that module, which is wired to activate with the usual purple start solenoid wire, for retard during starter engagement.

The fun just never ends !! Very Happy

The module idea didn't work for me like it was intended. I may have not had it wired right (?)

Just did a quick search about this. It appears that there were 2 types of 5 pin modules. One pulled timing when +12 volts is applied, the other pulled timing when the fifth pin is grounded.

I have to one that requires a grounded 5th pin. Not sure why it didn't work yet, but I'll fool with it more later..
