Re: Rusty's progress Crossmember and trans done
Hey Limey,
If you don't have plans for the Q-jet I'd be interested. $40 plus the ride? If you want to sell, send a pic of the top and the side where the throttle attaches. There should be some numbers running vertically where the throttle is, should be 1708####.
Thanks.
Is that a brake drum on the end of the tranny? Nice score!!

Re: Rusty's progress Crossmember and trans done
its a Parking brake for the Motorhome
And yes I will be selling the Quadrajet But already have an Offer of $150 for it and motor only has 65k on it so I don't see why it would not be a good carb Just have to remove it and grab some pics for ev1

Re: Rusty's progress Crossmember and trans done
You can't turn that down. I'm sure it will be a good carb. It will have to be re-worked for street use. Motorhome carbs have a odd-ball jet/rod set up because the engine is under constant load in RV.
That's a nice trans also, Heavy duty unit compared to a car one.
Thanks for the reply..

Re: Rusty's progress Crossmember and trans done
If it was intended to survive in a motor home, I have to expect the SE would be almost 'light' duty. Though I suppose that depends on how much your right foot weighs...

Re: Rusty's progress Crossmember and trans done
The parts in that engine will be fine for a street car. The crank and pistons are most likely cast. I believe the rods in a 1 ton truck would be 7/16” bolt rods.

Re: Rusty's progress Crossmember and trans done
OK I need a Guru here I have tried looking up these and some people Claim with out a doubt a Peanut port head Then I look up the link they said to look to verify ….It then says its an Oval port Head
OVAL PORT - Valve size 2.06 intake, 1.72 exhaust

Re: Rusty's progress Crossmember and trans done
Yup, those are peanut port heads. Nothing wrong with them unless you want to go past 4500 rpm or so.
Cam it up just a bit, or higher ratio rockers on the stock cam. Stock shift points in the trans and 2.73 gears would be the order of the day for these heads.
Here is a pic of 360 head intake ports that is for sale right now on Ebay. You can see the oval port gasket imprint vs the port.

Thanks Bobby looks like the 781 Heads are winning this battle pretty easy, will check pistons tomorrow when I pull them

Re: Rusty's progress Crossmember and trans done
Yes they are peanut port heads. That is all that was available on truck applications. The large oval port like the 781 went out in the earlier 80's. The pistons will most likely be a flat top piston with a relief for the intake valve. So you will be looking at a low 8:1 compression engine.

Re: Rusty's progress Crossmember and trans done
Well finally have all parts picked just need to get them ordered when my parts sell lol
Basic Operating RPM Range: 1,500-5,500
Intake Duration at 050 inch Lift: 224
Exhaust Duration at 050 inch Lift: 234
Duration at 050 inch Lift: 224 int./234 exh.
Advertised Intake Duration: 290
Advertised Exhaust Duration: 300
Advertised Duration: 290 int./300 exh.
Intake Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.527 in.
Exhaust Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.553 in.
Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.527 int./0.553 exh.
They Suggested Summit Stage 2 intake but it's the twin to my Edelbrock 2.0 intake, need to gather up a 1700 - 2100 stahl, carb is my quickfuel slayer 725cfm (they suggested going to a 700cfm) so can jet that down I would imagine, my 781 heads had the springs tested and are good to .600 lift so that's good there, he said heads just need a little love from sitting over winter but no worries. So now all the planning is done time to start ripping more into it and get busy.

Re: Rusty's progress Crossmember and trans done
Ok lets see what you got here. As far as I know the edelbrock 2.0 is a twin to the performer intake with the spreadbore pad. The Summit stage 2 is a copy of the original LS-6 aluminum square bore pad intake. The performer type will work, it'll just need an adapter plate to use a square bore holley carb. Overall, the stage 2 would probably make a few more HP on a dyno, but nothing that you would notice seat of the pants. For the carb, just use it. Its not too big. You can't jet it down to be smaller. You can jet it down to change the air/fuel ratio, but it will always be a 725. Also the fact that it is a vacuum secondary carb means the secondaries will actuate based on engine size and vacuum. If it was me, I wouldn't hesitate putting a 750 vacuum secondary carb on a street 454 as the quadrajet that was on it in the motorhome is a 750 at least as well. For the converter, a stock one will work to get you going, but if you are looking to upgrade, go for a 2-2400 converter. 17-21 is too close to stock, that it would probably function as a stock converter behind a mild engine.

Re: Rusty's progress Crossmember and trans done
That summit stage 2 definitely has an open pleunum unlike the dual plane of the edelbrock. I'd go edelbrock for the street if I had to choose between the two.

Re: Rusty's progress Crossmember and trans done
My 2cents FWIW:
If you have not purchased yet, Try to find the thinnest, smallest bore head gasket you can find for you'r bore size. Fel-Pro blues are thick. Cometic has a nice selection, but pricey at about $100 a piece. You need all the help you can get for compression.

It’s a dual plane with the divider milled. Just like the performer rpm air gap manifolds. Gm knew that milling the divider was worth power 40 years ago on the big blocks. But I agree for this application it’s not really necessary.
