Much of what you say about not wanting to have this site become a sounding board for political debate is probably good advice. But, you also can't just bury your head in the sand and not become informed...if not involved...with what's going on around you. Like it or not, politics affects us as car enthusiasts. Besides the obvious fallout from drilling moratoriums, anyone read the recent AP news release about the Fed's subsidizing the installation of E85 gas pumps at service stations across the nation? And, what about that disaster called the Cash for Clunkers program? The 10% (probably soon to be 15%) ethanol mandate? Emissions testing? State programs to get old cars off the roads. I could go on and on. The key to discussions is to be respectful.

Nail on the head there.
As most, if not all political discussions, they start off that way. But don't end that way.
I would hate to see that happen here and friends become enemies for something that could be 100% avoided.

Woot woot! Gas just dropped $0.04 per gallon around here. Gonna go fill up all of my gas jugs before it shoots up any higher.

Re: gas prices
It's been $3.77 at my place for a while now. I have changed my driving habits since the rise, and end the week with a 1/4 tank more than I used to. Only costs $5 more to fill it up than it did a month ago. Used to be $40, now it's $45. I drive close to 300, if not more, miles a week.

Re: gas prices
My '74 Monte isn't my daily driver.
My '98 Monte Carlo with a little 3.1 V6 is, so that's why it's so good.
The 74 is terrible on gas. I blew off a 1/4 tank just yesterday evening. Doing 110 on the highway to blow it out doesn't help though...lol.

Re: gas prices
FYI the whole increased ethanol thing is done its not going to happen and actually I think you are going to see a big shy away from it in the near future. Bad idea all around .

Re: gas prices
Seems like all we can do is wait it out and hope for prices to fall off. Of course with summer vacation travel on the horizon, the oil barons will likely put the needle to us fairly soon. Maybe my Malibu wont get "drove" as much this summer as I had hoped, at 9MPG.

Re: gas prices
wow, that is a lot even by european standards! although you have much better income than we do, so it probably can compare to our 1.30e/liter

Re: gas prices
A half an hour ago, I paid 3.88 a gallon for regular 87 at a local Marathon station. It's down about a dime a gallon since yesterday. Our 100LL av-gas is now way over 5 bucks a gallon. Maybe I wont be using that in my Malibu this year !! It sure likes it though....

Re: gas prices
I've been tweaking my 77 for mileage, up from an astounding 9mpg on the road when I got it to a semi-respectable 14mpg pulling commuter duty. rebuilt the carb, adjusted it to an inch of its life and a new fuel pump, set the timing by ear rather than follow the recommended base timing of 8 degrees, it runs about 12.
All said and done, 14 in town and about 20mpg on the road thanks to the somewhat thrifty 305, the boat-anchor two barrel, and the freeway friendly 2.56 rear end, coupled with a turbo-350. Heck today was the first time I've been able to drive it 300 miles on a tank, we'll see when I finally fill it up (ouch.)

Re: gas prices
If I am not mistaken, Gas has started rising due to the end of winter and the beggining of summer "driving season". It has reached 3.79 in my local areas. Good old New Hampshire seems pretty low compared to many other places..

It's creeped to 3.84 here, time to drive the Explorer and let the '77 sleep in the garage a while.

Re: gas prices
Looks like a number of states are realizing the potential lost revenues from the electric car and higher mileage compacts. Our esteemed DOT is studying the feasibility of a mileage tax on everyone. Early proposals are a 3-cent tax per mile in the metro area during peak driving hours and 1-cent the rest of the time and all other parts of the state. Their argument is that this will eventually replace the state gas tax...but, we all know that is a bunch of bunk! Besides, I have serious doubts the electric car will be embraced by more than a handful of people up here in the Northland and actual lost revenues will be negligible.

My wife just told me that it's $4.16 & 9 tenths at the local station today, for 87 regular.
And she was pissed !

All I know is that these high gas prices should sufficiently kill any hope of an economic turnaround.
